Hi, my name is Nene. I am currently a junior in high school. Since the age of three I have been in competitive cheer-leading. My absolute favorite color is light pink and yes, I do incorporate it into everything. I am originally from Los Angeles. I pray for this school year to be lots of fun!
Sprints 1 and 4 - styles header-5.jpg
Sprints 2 and 5 - FUNCTIONAL ART HEADER-4.jpg
Sprint 3 and 6 - Career Header-5.jpg

Within this painting you can see indefinite shades of black indicating some type of charcoal or easel crayons used to contrast the water colors that give vibrant auras to the characters. The strong contrast between the splashing of blending water colors against the immense black along with the semi-abstract lines helps give more creativity to the essence conveying through the faces. The contrast boldly gives a sense of infinity building the suspense of how close the faces are. This art paints a picture of a simple breathe between two people that is very intense, but that even the simplest things can have vigorous feelings.

During these graphite techniques I found blending and rendering the most enjoyable. The satisfying blend and shape of both techniques once the piece starts coming together is so much fun. Before these graphite techniques I had no realization that squiggly lines are an actual technique, quite silly and cute in my opinion. I could see myself using squiggly lines and blending in future sketches. Each graphite technique despite them having the same goal gives off a different personality which says a lot about how different art styles can interpret different stories.

I chose the manga tutorial. During the manga drawing tutorial, the artist shaded in the eyes in different areas, some that confused me, but all together it truly made the eyes beautiful and gave them a sense of spark. This assignment challenged my art skills in structure when it came to drawing hair. I am personally a fan of manga, anime, cartoons, and comic books art, so drawing this is so intriguing as the artist rather than the consumer.

It was really enjoyable to practice with the colored pencils, although it was hard for the pigment to properly blend onto the sketch paper. it was interesting with the layering technique, because now I could probably identify in many other arts. I could see myself using a lot of different gradients and layering techniques in the future art projects. it could be inferred that a lot of these techniques have a lot to do with color theory and how, depending on the color and technique can really affect the perspective.

For this colored pencil project, I chose the sweethearts YouTube video. It was very inspiring to use different types of medias like watercolors and colored pencils together, although it was difficult, I was able to use the burnish technique from earlier assignments. I could better reflect on this with my watercolor skills, focusing more on the weight of water and using the color pencils to probably blend and bring dimension to the work. It was very fun, but it was very taxing when it came to my color pencil skills.

When participating in this acrylic paring tutorial I had the most fun doing the “edge/cutting” technique. I found it so satisfying when the brush moved so neatly against the pencil line with the paint. The “dry brush” technique was a little bit aggravating due to the habit of just wanting to wet the paint brush. I could see myself using the “edge/cutting” technique in future art projects.

This painting was a bit challenging to master as so many different version of the same technique was used such as blending and under coloring. To precisely get the paint to reflect the effect I was trying to give was the challenging part. I did learn how to make water reflections in a painting to make it more “organic”. This was great practice to get more comfortable with using colors in different ways to add depth to a painting.

This chalk pastel art is based on the field of flowers tutorial. This tutorial seemed to step foot into impressionism as the photo was distorted with the chalk pastels to give the illusion of said photo. It was an artistic challenge do attempt to capture the same illusion that impressionist do in their art work. The main challenge being depth and subtle detail in the art work. I was able to use the “scumble” chalk pastel technique in this art work.

I chose to do an oil pastel tutorial of flowers with a blue sky in the background. It was challenging trying to master the texture of oil pastels, as too much of a base oil pastel could infringe on how prominent future colors may come out. When I attempted at putting white on the blue oil pastel base it was a bit challenging as there was so much blue material that made it challenging for the white to come out on to. I used the technique of adding white onto color for a clearer blend of colors. This was a fun art piece to do, but definitely was great practice with oil pastels.

For this art assignment I chose the tree tutorial. I remembered the practice I add with watercolors and made sure to keep a steady hand so that the paint can be applied neatly rather than over generously that made the paint too wet. Using a balled up paper to make leaves in the watercolor tree is smart. My leaves were looking like roses when I rotated the paper ball when putting the paint on it. The dynamic between red and orange beautifully contrast the leaves and gives it so much character along with the detail of the layering of brown and black for the trunk and branches of the tree. Honestly so much fun.

When trying to control the charcoal it seemed tricky at first. It felt like the charcoal wanted to just go all in on one layer, but I had to evenly apply it in layers for it to be properly applied. I enjoyed practicing using the smudger. It made the blending and 3-d effect actually work. This was lots of fun and great practice for artist’s patience.

This art work from this opt made me feel the most expressive and I had the one of the most joys creating this artwork. I practiced the steady hand and layering technique with the water colors. Along with that the blending and under painting technique. When completing this art I also used the edging technique mixed with the laying technique to make the branches of the tree pop more. This art piece also used other materials such as a balled up piece of paper and saran-wrap to capture the texture of the leaves in the tree. It was inspiring to see how something so ordinary created mesmerizing and beautiful patterns.

Unless I will let myself focus on the object and what I’m trying to interpret it to be then that’s when it felt more complicated. It is a great lesson that lots of parts of our are shapes and sizes so that it can be interpreted better.

Jennifer Zurick does make money off of her basket making as her prices range from $500-$5000 for just one of her baskets. It can be obvious to infer that Ms. Zurick's business is not at international mogul level. Her basket making is at a lower level but it involves hand-made, high quality, time-given, hard working pieces. That is what the pricing is based on. Others might think the pricing for a basket made by Ms. Zurick is absurd, but with all that one basket entails, it is simply what Ms. Zurick has found to be of equal compensation.
