Hello, we are here today to discuss waste and the problems surrounding it in developing countries. Millions of water bottles are sent each year to developing countries but the problem is that these countries cannot recycle. Therefore, these bottles are simply dumped and wasted. Despite the fact we try to help these countries by sending aid the packaging becomes the problem. Therefore, to conquer this problem we have come up with Insul-ate. Insul-ate is a simple but economical way to send aid to developing countries. But first, let’s discuss the problem.

The Compactor

The compactor has been designed to ensure that most people can use it with ease and that it does not require too much force to compact. The build itself is made from steel. The lever used to compact is telescopic and due to mechanical advancements this will make it much easier to function. To make it work simply pull out the lever to full length and push down with good force and this will then compact the materials inside, down into a block. The main compaction box is made from sheet steel, welded and braced.

The Problem

After conducting research in this matter we discovered that in cities of developing countries, the amount of plastic waste takes up approximately 20% of household waste. The problem is they cannot do anything with it. Despite our best efforts to help these countries the aid we send is in packaging that is of no use to them. With no or little recycling in many developing countries, plastic waste is slowly becoming a major problem. An example is choked drainage systems as it can cause flooding in urban areas after rainfall, giving health problems such as malaria and other water borne diseases the opportunity to spread. Also, littered streets give reasons for tourists to avoid these areas which deny cities the chance to grow globally amongst tourists. The compaction of waste would also reduce the need to send things to landfill which could prevent pollution. With these ideas in mind, we believe turning this problem into a resource could be a big step forward and could help developing countries.

The Lifeblock

The lifeblock is a simple but economical way to send resources to developing countries. The brick would consist of two sections: water and food. Once the food and water had been consumed the block, along with others, would fit together and interlock like lego® to construct buildings. This would provide suitable shelters for families. The block would be shiny white and blue in colour to keep heat in during cold nights and the heat out during warm days. With the lifeblock made two layers thick the compacted plastic would be placed between the layers. The insulation would be provided through plastic and trapped air. The insulation in terms of thermal resistance would measure 5.24. (Refer to R-Values)
