Abyss

The last week of the first semester when the whole school was taking finals was like my abyss when regarding life. This four day week was extremely stressful and caused me to just not want to go to school. Everything was on the line for me with my grades on the verge of dropping a letter, and it truly matter how well I did.

Finals week relates to the Abyss step of the Hero’s journey because it was the hardest fight that I had to face in first semester. Finals were the whole reason behind all of the challenges and temptations of tests that I had to go up against.

It was just like facing a devil or shadow figure. It put me through enough stress to relate to a “death experience” in a mild way, but I survived.

Call to adventure

The Call to adventure for my experience would be registration day in the high school. All of the freshman came to the school to know their classes, checkout the textbooks, talk to counselors, and signed up for sports. This was the time where I realized that school was actually starting soon. It was a time where I had to recognize that I was going to face the early mornings and long days that were approaching before I knew it.

The call to adventure is suppose to be a significant movement or sign that the journey needs to start and soon. I had refusal to even wake up for school, but I had to realize that it'd basically already started. The semester had begun.

Gift of the goddess

The gift of the goddess through my first semester of high school was when I finally received my report card after seeking to get through this half of school. After my whole stress filled journey, my main goal was given to me, all A’s.

The gift of the goddess is suppose to be a present given to the hero after they have completed the tasks at hand, and achieved their goal. What I was seeking were good grades in all of my difficult classes and after my long and hard journey they were given to me.

Challenges and temptations

The challenges throughout my first semester of high school include the whole process of taking tests and quizzes, the stress of getting everything turned in on time, plus trying to balance school in with sports. Along the way I was also introduced to teachers as my mentors and my friends were my helpers of this survival through high school.

Challenges and temptations are suppose to be elements of the Hero’s Journey that make the character struggle before actually taking on the largest task at hand. It's pretty much the whole book or movie, its the adventure before the main battle, its the preparation for later on.

Emmet’s challenges and temptations includes the process that he goes through in order to escape Bad Cop and Lord Business’s robots as well as the planning procedure for trying to put the piece of resistance on the Kraggle. During this adventure Emmet makes new friends, such as Wildtyle, Batman, the Pirate Man, and the Space Guy, that help him defeat Lord Business. He also finds himself a mentor named Vitruvius that guides him to become a master builder.

Emmet in the Lego Movie faces his biggest battle against Lord Business when we fails at connecting the Kraggle and the piece of resistance, but gets captured, and is soon locked against a battery preparing for an explosion. But right before the clock gets to one, he jumps off the side of the building and falls to the floor, saving all of the master builders.

hero gift of the goddess

In my mind, at the end of the Lego Movie, Emmet gains two gifts, one literally and other theoretically. The physical gift is a loveable, and romantic gift. Throughout the whole movie, Emmet tries to hold hands with Wildstyle but Batman always interrupts, but by the end, they finally do. On the other "hand", Emmet’s second gift is that he becomes a master builder and is informed of the true meaning of being special.

hero call to adventure

Emmet’s call to adventure is the time when he see’s Wildstyle looking for the piece of the resistance, but he discovers it first. According to the prophecy, Emmet is considered to be the special who is “the most important, most talented, most interesting, and most extraordinary person in the universe,”. But he doesn’t see himself that way and neither does anyone else. Although he soon realizes that he might actually be the special.
