Coming into Italian 102 with the prior knowledge being the present tense, a brief overview of the passato prossimo, and cultural knowledge on food, fashion, and a few Italian regions. In Italian 102, I became more confident in my ability to conjugate in the passato prossimo as well as in the imperfetto. However, most of all, I realized that my academic interests lie in comparative government. I realized that through studying the strengths and weaknesses of the Italian government. Also, throughout the whole semester I learned how to expand descriptions with sentences with the use of che and cui. I learned how to conjugate my verbs in the imperfetto when talking about what I used to do when I was younger. In Italian 102, I become more confident with pronunciation and learned to speak a little bit more fluently in Italian; however, the thing that I am happiest about is the fact that I am pretty much confident in the area of study that I will be studying in.

After my first journal was returned to me, I knew that I would do very well in Italian 102. I knew that I would survive Italian 102. However, when journal number two was returned to me I realized that I was confusing some Italian words with Spanish because they were spelled so similarly. Also, I realized that sometimes I forgot to add indefinite articles. Journals in general were helpful to me although there were mistakes made. By writing down multiple sentences to formulate stories, I was able to further cement the spelling of vocabulary words into my muscle memory and by going back to Percosi to fix my mistakes, I was able to better memorize vocabulary; but not just the vocabulary that I am looking for but, also other vocabulary.

Chapter 10 was a chapter with a lot of information. There was the passato prossimo, the imperfetto, and the traspassato. I had to learn how to conjugate the verbs based on the context around it. When it was just the passato prossimo and the imperfetto it was easy to distinguish between the two but adding a third option made it very difficult. I didn’t know how difficult it was until I got to Test number two whish us what I talk about in the next section. However, for this section I will discuss how I struggled with cui. I struggled with determining what prepositions to put in front of cui. However, I found the exercise that we did in class with the reading to be very helpful. That was very helpful because we actually went back into the text and picked out which terms determined which preposition to use. However, I know that activities like those will not always be available but that furthered my understanding of cui. That exercise is shown to the right.

During test number two, I realized that I struggled with fill in the blank exercises dealing with the passato prossimo, imperfetto, and traspassato prossimo. The realized that the reason that I struggled so much with discerning the imperfetto and the traspassto prossimo is because of the similar -evo that is put on the end of the conjugated verbs in the imperfetto and the avevo that is the linking verb in the traspassato prossimo. During the test, I simply had to remember that the passato prossimo and the traspassato prossimo have linking verbs in front of them.

I personally think that the pronunciation activities that we did after Percosi gave us a new vocabulary list was very helpful. Not only did it help me improve my pronunciation, it made me more capable to pick up certain distinct sounds that certain letter sequences make. For example, the "che" sound or the "sci" sound. I realized that if a word has a "k" sound then the word has "che" or if there is a "she" sound then the word has "sci". So now words flow more easily from my tongue. Also, when I know that there is a big assessment coming up such as an oral or a test, I do extra practices on MyLab. MyLab has a very big role in my improvement of grammar material and vocabulary. However, it's not just MyLab, it is also , it is also Percosi because it does a great job at providing examples of sentences so that we will understand how to utilize all of the grammar that we learn. Aquella, the person that I collaborated with in order to this part of the portfolio, also agreed that MyLab is very helpful. In contrast, Aquella does well with listening activities, whereas, I struggle with listening activities. Although, pronunciation activities do allow my ear to better being able to pick up certain sounds, I still struggle with catching certain phrases when the speaker is talking too quickly. Personally, I excel with true or false sections because I go back and circle the phrase in the text and then look at the context around it to be able to determine if it is true or false. but Aquella struggles with that. Aquella suggested doing flash cards to help with memorization but I disagree. Flash cards are not un any way helpful to me. For this activity in particular, I suggest doing a part of the portfolio after the reflection has been written so that there isn't rushing or confusion at the end of the semester.
