The drug acts on GABA receptors in the brain by causing the release of the GABA neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are naturally occurring chemicals found in the brain to transmit messages. Normally, GABA plays a role in how tired you are and help with you feeling relaxed. When xanax is taken, it increases the brain's GABA activity and creates a feeling of calm (which is why it is used to treat panic disorders). However, when the drug is used when there is not enough GABA in the first place, it can produce the adverse effects. With the presence of xanax, the brain believes that it no longer needs to produce GABA, which will lead to the person making even less naturally than they did before.

LSD also alters the way the retinas process the information and send that information to the brain.

Ecstasy (MDMA) affects the brain by increasing the activity of three neurotransmitters; serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. MDMA increases the release of these chemicals and/or blocks their reuptake which results in increased neurotransmitter levels within the brain. Because of the large amounts of chemicals flooding the brain, the drug causes the brain to become dependent on the serotonin. Research has shown that rats who are given moderate to high doses of MDMA, given twice daily for four days, caused them nerve damage (in the cells which stored serotonin). 7 years later, these rodents had significantly less numbers in serotonergic neutrons.

When the drug enters the bloodstream and goes to the brain, cocaine increases levels of the natural chemical messenger (dopamine) which is also related to the control of movement and rewards. Normally, dopamine is recycled back into the cell that releases it, shutting off the signal between nerve cells. Cocaine stops this from happening, gradually increasing the space between two nerve cells. This eventually hinders their normal communication abilities. The high amounts of dopamine in the brain causes the reward circuit to become adapt to it and will eventually become less sensitive to dopamine. As a result, people need more and more each time to achieve the same results.

How does it affect your brain?

There have been recent studies observing the effects of marijuana (TCH) on animals (rats) before brith, soon after birth, and during adolescence. These rats have shown problems with specific learning and memory tasks later in life. Cognitive impairments in adult rats exposed to THC during adolescence are associated with structural and function changes in the hippocampus. (THC is a cannabinoid, a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant that interacts with receptors in the brain). These studies also show that the marijuana had altered their reward system in the brain which increases the likelihood that the animal will self-administer other drugs. This is why many believe marijuana to be a gateway drug.
