I threw incredible parties and bought a fancy house to try and capture the attention of Daisy. She wouldn't notice me. I even "bought [this] house so that Daisy would be just across the bay" (78). My life was lived for her- she was everything that I ever wanted. I did everything for her:"[I] had waited five years and bought a mansion where [I] dispensed starlight to casual moths--so [I] could 'come over' some afternoon to a stranger's garden" (78). My money was spent trying to impress her and be close to her. Apparently my wealth wasn't enough to make her stay.

My fate was sealed from the moment Daisy and I sped away from Wilson's garage the night Myrtle had died. Nick was the only one at my funeral after I was killed. After my death, I was just as alone as I was before: "But all this part of it seemed remote and unessential. [Nick] found [himself] on [my] side, and alone. [He] telephones news of the catastrophe to West Egg Village, every surmise about [me], and every practical question, was referred to [him]" (164). After that fateful night, no amount of money could have saved me. Death is not something that can be change by any amount of money. Materials or money couldn't change my fate- nothing could've.

In the end, all my efforts couldn't bring me back to the past. My money, my mansion, my materials, my people. Nothing could make the past repeat itself. My money only got me so far. Life moved on without me- my wealth forgotten. The world didn't stop when I died:"It eluded us then, but that's no matter-tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...And one fine morning- So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past" (180). In the end my wealth and my resources weren't enough to turn back time.

Gatsby's Fate: Set in Stone

Gatsby had everything he needed to live and then some. Fancy cars and fancy parties weren't enough for him. He wanted more. He wanted things that money couldn't buy. His things and connections weren't enough to save him or to bring Daisy back. His time ran out before his wealth and he suffered the consequence. No one is spared from death: no matter how much money you have or how many people you know. Gatsby was wealthy but in the eyes of society he was in a low class because of the methods to achieve his status. In the article The Few, The Proud, The Individuals, the idea of wealth and success and the distinction between them is discussed saying that America "confuse[s] wealth with success and noise with happiness" (Beres). From the very beginning, Gatsby's fate was already set, starting from the moment he started climbing the ladder of wealth. His wealth is not equal to his level of success. Tom and the old wealthy class does not see him as successful. No amount of money he made could change the way that society would see him and no fancy mansion could change his fate.

I really like the way you begin this padlet--it does seem to be about time. Maybe that's something Fitzgerald was trying to get us to consider. No matter how much we have, time will always get the better of us. And it is the one thing that none of us can control, no matter how entitled we might feel or powerful we consider ourselves to be.

Nice use of material from the novel. I know it was a little tricky writing it from Gatsby's point of view, but you did this well.

And I like the class example. The way Fitzgerald writes about the 20s, it seems that the whole society was distracted by noise. Of course, he's writing about a small segment, but, still, it points to something similar between that generation and our own time.

Thanks for the work!
