Choice Book: The Color Purple

In highschool, our teachers would give us 5 books to chose from that included DEI standards to futher our education and knowledge on topics. Giving students a choice is important and gives them freedom to find out what areas of content they enjoy. Then we would meet with other students who also picked the same book, and be able to talk and share our own ideas. This helped me engage with classmates I never may have

End of the year assignment: we got to write about one thing that we took away from the class and one thing that we would change for next years class. This was done throughout many grades during LA to show the interests of students. This made me feel that I had a voice because it was the end of the year and I could give my own opinions too.

Write about your experiences as a Language Arts student in the middle and high school grades. Describe the curriculum and pedagogy of your Language Arts classes – what was taught and how was it taught. Be as specific as you can be about content, lessons, and activities/assignments. Include classroom structures that supported learning and those that hindered learning for students in the classroom. No need to try to include every grade level, rather include the grade levels and content that made the biggest impression on you as a learner, reader, and writer.

I grew as a writer when I was able to find things that were important to me and write about them.
Our teacher would do many assignments where we could play get to know you games, tell me a fun fact, what's something you've never shared with anyone before? When putting my ideas on paper, our teachers encouraged us to think outside of the box since we would not collaborate on the personal part. I felt empowered and encouraged when writing my college essay because I didn't feel the pressure for it to be perfect, I just felt that it needed to be real and authentic. Which is what real writing is.

In 7th grade we read "The Outsiders" and then we were able to dress up as a greaser or a soc. We were encouraged to dress as the one we resonated with the least, which I found to be very eye opening among my classmates. We were all looking forward to learn more about the book and the background of it because we had an incentive to look forward to. This made me enjoy the book more and find other similar novels to it, which jump started my like of reading again.

Middle school LA is where I felt like a science experiment since we were trying out different state testing websites. My teachers harped on the material that would be on them, and we wernt through them like a checklist every single day to squeeze in a new content area match. I hated this because I didn't feel like I was being educated, I was being trained.

In middle school,
Some of my teachers had a fun class set up in our LA class. There were seating choices of high chairs, bean bags, rugs etc. and she would give us 45 mins to read on our own whether it was a group book with partners, individual or a class book. This was something I always looked forward to because she would let us also read our own books or ones from her library. It was our time to reset, be independent etc.
