He reunites with Anja and her family. Things seem normal at first, as if there was no Nazi occupation. This blissful ignorance of the situation soon dissipates, and the realization that the Jewish population have all been corralled into ghettos sets in, and what seemed to be a return to the high life quickly turns into  a constant struggle to survive. Vladek is cutting his teeth on jewels, pawning everything valuable he has off and uses them as bribes.
Anja's father tries everything in his power to ward off the gestapo and Jewish police, yet to no avail. To make an example of those attempting to outsmart the Nazi occupation, people are hung in the street, their bodies on full display. With the threat of being sent to Auschwitz looming over them, they begin bouncing from ghetto to ghetto. Artie visits Vladek after he gets some coffee and is met with hostility from his father. He soon discovers that Vladek is hostile because of the discovery of a comic Artie drew depicting his mothers suicide in grotesque detail. The piece even shocks Artie, disturbed by how shameless this was and how vain and self loathing it is. Vladek assures him that all is well and that he was only overcome with emotion.  We pick up right after Vladek and his family left one of the ghettos, evading being sent to the camps for a death sentence.
Vladek is forced to work at German shops, all the while being unrelentingly watched by officials. A large amount of people begin to be taken into prison camps. Tosha, who is related to Anja, refuses to endure the camp; she refuses to have these innocent children endure such pain, so she poisons herself as well as Richeu and her two children. This event destroys Vladek and Anja, Anja unable to keep it together. Within no time, Vladeks group is snuffed out and Anja's family is killed. A man living his best life before the Nazi regime seized control of his country. He showed a plethora of selfless acts but in the end committed an unforgivable sin in his son's eyes: destroying Anja's diary, essentially murdering her legacy. But given the tribulation he endured, you can't fault him for being turned into someone he never wanted to be.
