In "The Story of an hour" Josephine veils hints that half conceal to Mrs.Mallard that her husband died. Her husband's friend Richards was there, too, near her. He was the one who first heard of the railroad incident and he saw Brently Mallards name leading the list of "killed". The storm of grief had taken over Mrs.Mallard and she went to her room alone. She had thought for a bit and then started to whisper the word free. She started realizing that she would be able to live for herself. As much as she loved Brently there were times when she didn't. Louise goes with Josephine and Richards. Then someone starts opening the door with a latchkey. It was Brently who had been far from the accident, and didn't even know there was one. Josephine starts crying and Richards tried to screen Brently's view, but he was too late. When the doctors came they said Louise died of heart disease--of joy that kills.

Louise/Mrs.Mallard-We learn she is conflicted on whether or not to be sad that her husband died. In the text it states,"She was beginning to realize that this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will"(Chopin page 2). This is indirect, because you have to put together that the thing she is trying to beat is joy of her husbands death.
Josephine-We learn that Josephine is a caring sister we know this, because in the text it says,"Louise open the door! I beg; open the door--you will make yourself ill"(Chopin page 2). This is indirect, because it implies that she cares about her sisters health without saying it directly.

Human vs self-Louise tries to hold back the excitement of her husbands death. "She was beginning to realize that this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will"(Chopin page 2).
Human vs Human- Louise does not let Josephine in the room even though she just wants to help. "Louise open the door! I beg; open the door--you will make yourself ill"(Chopin page 2).
Human vs Nature- Louise wants to live a long life but when she sees that Brently is alive her heart trouble escalates and she dies. " She breathed a quick prayer that life might be long." and " When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of joy that kills"(Chopin page 3)

Irony- Louise is glad her husband is dead but she doesn't know that he is perfectly fine and wan't hurt. This contributes to the story, because it shows that she is happier without him even though he is perfectly alive and he probably thought of the day to be just like every other day.
Louise decides she wants to live a long life without her husband but he is the one who is alive when she dies. This contributes to the story, because it shows that her selfish ideas ended up being exactly the opposite of what she wanted.
Imagery- " She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob cam up in her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dream"(Chopin page 1). This contributes to the story by going in depth to the sadness that Louise is displaying.
"There was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory"(Chopin page 3). This contributes by describing how victorious Louise looked and felt after she thought her husband died.
Foreshadowing- The story tells us about Louise having heart troubles which is later the cause of her death. Richards had sent a telegram because he wasn't sure that Brently died and then it turns out that Brently is alive.

A theme developed by the author is that people will feel more free without love. She develops this by going into the mind of Louise and showing how excited she is that her husband died. Louise sees her husbands death as a path to freedom.
