Phonics is embedded into the understanding of language. Students will need to have a grasp on phonics in order to be good readers and writers. Without phonics students, especially ELL’s will struggle with how to write, read and verbalize words. It is key to understanding language as a whole. When I started learning German the first thing that we learned were the different vowel and consonant sounds. Without these skills I would not be reading, writing, or speaking the language properly.

This stage occurs just like it suggests, the beginning. The best way to help them is to expose them to letters, spelling, reading, etc. as much as possible. For example writing the names of the students that are not at school and talking about the letters in it, sounds they make, different words that start with those letters, etc. This will help them start making important connections they will need to be good readers and writers in the future.

This stage is also the alphabetic stage. This stage occurs when students are first learning different letters and what they sound like. In this stage students "without being consciously aware that they are doing this... [they] spell short vowels with the letter name closest in articulation to that short vowel" pg 156. Systematic word study works best when helping students in this stage; practicing the different letter patterns.

Students in this stage are between the beginning stages and intermediate stages. This usually occurs around 1-3 grade (think tutor student ). In this stage, practice is really important. It makes them more fluent readers and writers. They are working on blends, digraphs, vowels, and general fluency (which is why practice is important).

Students in this stage are usually moving into this stage around 2nd-4th grade. Students in this stage they start to put together the pieces that they have been learning. they are figuring out how syllables fit together and how what is at the beginning (prefixes) and end (suffixes) of the word. The best way to help them is to help them see patterns and trends and then use those patterns to learn reading/writing words. An example would be to make dream past tense would be dream-er. Word sorts and skill and drill help the best when learning the rules and then moving to application activities help them solidify the concepts in this stage.
