They enable people to gain further insights regarding specific topics to further their understanding. Moreover, reading serves as a platform for some to relieve stress or as a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It's disheartening to know that their love for reading is slowly deteriorating (this might be a controversial take, but) because it implies that people nowadays aren't as hungry for new knowledge, to improve themselves and pursue lifelong learning. I strongly believe that reading is a fundamental part of starting to do something new. For example, I was tasked to deliver a presentation on managing stress. To start my project, I researched multiple platforms to source sufficient information to input into my presentation. Without reading and understanding the causes of stress or ways of mitigating stress, I wouldn't have a clue what to say. With the number of people reading declining at a concerning rate, it will impose negative effects on different people globally. Firstly, in schools, students might adopt a culture of not reading, which weakens their language literacy and their ability to strive for academic excellence, or even communicate. Furthermore, for content-heavy subjects, students wouldn't be eager to expand their horizons, or even put such knowledge into real practice due to the societal norm of not reading. Furthermore, reduced reading abilities can detrimentally affect people's ability to communicate, and education, healthcare, employment and economic sectors globally.
