Dred Scott was a slave who had unsuccessfully sued for freedom for him, his wife and two daughters. It took a decade to decide, the Supreme Court making their decision on March 6, 1857. Scott spend two years in Illinois, a free state with his owner before returning to Missouri, a slave state. They ruled his time there didn't make him free, further ruling he couldn't bring suit because he was a black man. The decision shocked abolitionists and caused a further divide between the North and South.

The Battle of Antietam was a day-long battle on September 17, 1862 in Sharpsburg and Washington County, Maryland. The battle was considered a loss on both sides due to the amount of people who died, and is considered one of the deadliest battles in American history. However, the battle gave Abraham Lincoln the confidence to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, threatening to free all enslaved people if confederate states didn't return to the Union.
