Elle est née 30 mars 1964, dans un quartier populaire de Cleveland, où elle a grandi par la suite. Passionnée par la musique dès son plus jeune âge, elle partageait son amour pour cet art avec sa mère, qui chantait à l’église chaque dimanche. C’est elle qui lui a offert sa première guitare à l’âge de 8 ans (un instrument qu’elle n’a plus quitté ensuite). Cette mère qui l’encourageait a refusée qu’elle se lance dans la musique avant d’avoir terminé ses études. Ce n’est donc qu’après avoir obtenu un diplôme que son immense carrière a pu commencer. "Je dois dire que je n’aurais jamais pensé obtenir un contrat avec une grande maison de disques", a déclaré Tracy Chapman.
