Peret is known as the "King of the Catalan Rumba". He started singing when he was very young: in the middle 60s. At that time, Spain was ruled by a dictator called Franco, and the Catalan language was forbidden. This is maybe one of the reasons why Peret (a Catalan first name meaning "little Peter") used to sign in Spanish.

It's called "Havanera" because it was born at a time when many Catalans used to set out on a long journey to the Spanish overseas colonies Puerto Rico and Cuba to do business. (As you know: The capital of Cuba is Havana)

As origens do Vira, que alguns situam no ternário da valsa oitocentista e outros buscam mais atrás, no Fandango, parecem ser de remota idade, como defendeu Gonçalo Sampaio e também Sampayo Ribeiro, que as coloca antes do séc. XVI e levanta mesmo a hipótese de filiação na canção que acompanhava o bailado ou tordião. Tomaz Ribas considera o Vira uma das mais antigas danças populares portuguesas, salientando que já o escritor Gil Vicente a ele fazia referência na peça Nau d’Amores, onde o dava como uma dança do Minho.
