Both are Christians, which are the set of our moral and ethical beliefs which our identities are based off of, which then they both twist and manipulate to relate communism, or witch's to fire, which represents hell which incites fear in both their audiences to support their "witch-hunt"

Both of these quotes demonstrate the speakers' knowledge that people value authority. Danforth is alluding to how if you have no power and go against the court, you might as well be against them. This is representative of how people are expected to follow units of power. McCarthy is speaking to the president and wants him to denounce communism publicly or else the Democrats will all be seen as communist. He knows that if the President, who is in power, says something anti-communism, the people will follow. Both of these quotes are intended to elicit fear. In the Crucible, if you're against the court you might as well be a witch and you will be killed. McCarthy is eliciting fear because the president wouldn't want his country to fall apart and the Democratic party to be looked down upon as a whole.
