What Makes Interesting Theatre?

Interesting theatre is made by emotional connection, authenticity, and shared experiences. In my opinion, emotional connection is the main thing that makes theatre interesting. The ability to captivate an audience and provide escapism adds enjoyment to the theatre experience. Deep emotions can be felt during a performance, whether it's joyful or saddening, creating a realistic environment, almost as if the performance is happening in real life. Theatre being live and unpredictable makes it interesting because performances are happening in real time making them unique and specific to the moment, unlike television. Many shared experiences in theatre create a bond between performers and the audience as they all experience the same event together. Authentic characters make theatre interesting because they are relatable and believable, providing a sense of humanity that the audience can connect with. A compelling story also makes interesting theatre as a play needs a strong plot to keep the audience engaged.

Powerful language is a key to interesting theatre as the way characters speak conveys meaning and builds tension. Audience engagement makes interesting theatre as the audience are active participants, bringing comfort to the performers and other audience members. Theatricality such as lighting, set design, and costume, actors physicality, skills, and interaction with the audience, create unique ways of storytelling which make interesting theater.

I like to watch theatre with real meaning, plays and musicals that bring a lot of emotions, such as Blood Brothers - Dennis Kelly. Blood Brothers shows realistic themes and powerful storylines, it explores tragedy and destruction. Foreshadowing is used to create a sense of impending doom which makes the audience unable to predict the events of the musical. The characters emotional journey is a key to the musical, Mickey’s journey from a happy childhood to a depressing adulthood show realistic themes and it builds a strong connection with the audience.

There is a perfect blend of tragicness and humor, in the first act there is a lot of laughter, the mix of humor from act one and the sadness in act two make the later events more impactful and emotional.

The ideas that our group had were apocalypse, artificial intelligence, and Post-apocalyptic.

The devices we used was mime where part of the storyline was acted out through movement and gesture without the character speaking, fashbacks when we transitioned to an earlier event, we also used a narrator,as Levi told the story of the scenes. Finally we used thought tracking when the group made a still image and certain characters spoke their thoughts or feelings.

The basis of this performance was "fighting depression" and "going through emotions". Each person represented a different emotion, every other person either a positive or negative emotion. We used status to highlight characters and their relationships,Mal doing all the movements and communication highlighted him as the main character, we used a soundscape to create the atmosphere when we all fell down at the start, and Mal used physical theatre when the emotions to mimick lifting up the positive emotions. We all collaborated as a group well and equally shared ideas and input which led to our peice being successful, however we could've improved if we had more time to create the performance and if everyone's objects linked together easily.

Theatre is used as a communicative tool though many ways, for example storytelling. Storytelling shows realistic human experiences that communicate with the audience as it could be relatable or emotional. Audience may feel connected to a certain character because they can relate to what the character is feeling and experiencing.

Body language communicates with the audience about how a character is feeling in the scene which is importantto understand the deeper meanings and connections in a performance. In theatre, an individual can express themselves in ways they may have never done before

Foreshadowing

Foreshadowing is a key device used in many plays and musicals. For example, Heather's,The Musical. This is shown in the opening song "beautiful" when Veronica Sawyer sings "Then I can blow this town" which foreshadows the ending of the musical when JD blows the school up. This foreshadowing is key to the musical because it builds suspense and captivate the audience.

There is also foreshadowing in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream", where hints of future events are woven into the dialogue. For example, the mention of dreams or the "course of true love".

Soliloquy

Soliloquys are used in plays and musicals. For example in Macbeth, there are many soliloquys performed by the characters including Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. In Act 2, Scene 1, Macbeth performs an important soliloquy, "Is this a dagger which I see before me", this was significant to the plot as it deepens the emotion felt by Macbeth which captivates the audience.

The musical "Hamilton" also uses soliloquys during the song "The World Was Wide Enough", when he slows down during the duel and reflects on his life and legacy. This soliloquy brings a heart breaking climax for the ending of the musical.
