I think they are always looking out for Max even if he doesn't know it. The murder of their daughter must have been traumatizing, so it's no wonder they have all this fear. The fact that Grim and Gram experienced a major trauma also reminds me of my grandparents who had to endure the prison camps during the Holcaust. Maybe the trauma is what made both Grim and Gram and my grandparents so tough.
