I wholeheartedly agree with the idea that each person should develop their own thought process. This philosophy would bring about new ideas and more efficient ways of thinking which would, in theory, spur on the development of society. But at the same time I do not agree with the way individualism will affect people. If people were to follow individualism, would that not also be another form of conforming with the norms of society? This idea is intriguing because its highly paradoxical. It follows the Pilgrims on their flee to Holland where they realize they do not have the means to colonize. They make a business deal with 2 businesses that have conditions to their financial backings. The Pilgrims started their sea voyage and after some mishaps and hard days, found themselves here in America. The Pilgrims had their ups & downs trying to thrive colonizing under socialist ideals...and decided to try a system where the people were given land. Now, they were able to keep the fruits of their labor as their own rather than to pool it into the rest of the colony. It took us back to before the pilgrims came to America, and gave us some info about their past. It also informed us why the pilgrims were called the pilgrims and how they got that name.

My screenshot is not that clear and I am unable to get a clearer one. So I have written out exactly what my six bubbles say belloI did not know that the pilgrims had a contract with the Virginia companies of London and Plymouth that was socialist. I knew that they had made  a deal with them to settle a new colony, but not that the contract they had was socialist.


The socialist way the pilgrims were supposed to do things did not work out very well for them. Everyone had to work for everyone else and there was no private property. This did not make the pilgrims happy, and for the first two years they had small harvests.

The harvest of 1621 was small. A fact I did not know even though I am a history student. Most accounts of the story say they had a “good” harvest, and say nothing about that harvest being small. It puts a new light on the thanksgiving celebration. They thanked God for the small harvest even though it was small.


The socialist way did not work and. Governor Bradford decided to throw it off in 1623.  he did this also because they came to believe that socialism was not godly. One reason among many is that women had to work for all of people who lived there like everyone else. However, this meant they had to work for men they were not married too. That fact caused a lot of issues for the deeply religious pilgrims. With other  religious reasons the decision was to end the socialist way.



In 1623  everyone planted for themselves. Planting what food they needed to feed their families. Suddenly, more was planted and people who had been weak became strong enough to work. This had to do with motivation I think. If the mindset is to plant for everyone then that is more work and a larger challenge. If the mindset changes to be plant for yourself an family than that becomes more manageable.  


The drought of 1623 was another thing I did not know about the pilgrims story. When drought did come they set a day side to pray. That evening God sent rain. This lead to the belief that God could use drought to humble them.

I agreed whole heartedly that we should not let Politicians and the Media define Poverty. The numbers show a completely different story. 

True Poverty most definitely exists. There are children living with hungry bellies and cold nights. Thankfully, the reality of those numbers sit at the lowest percentages. 

What this means, in my opinion, is that we can and should be reconsidering a revamp of the welfare system. So that we can truly know how to help the people in the lower percentages, who need it most.

My husband served in Africa and Iraq where poverty is normal. The article was written pretty well, it seems like the author hit both sides of whether it works or not, I am going to say that the generalizations of socialism are not fair to the actual word, and I don't think that socialism means at all what it meant in 1917. Maybe it is true that socialism is impossible, but socialist ideas are already alive and well. I felt like I was the only onw who choose this article but I really connected with the facts presented in the article. The word poverty in the U.S suggest there is lack of ability to provide enough food,  clothing, and shelter. This is a emotional issue that many struggle with daily. I choose this article because I feel that I can relate. A struggling family will always try their best to get by. With society knowing many facts about the Americas Poor. However, it is hard for me to believe that being poor in America is such a walk in the park, and I feel like this article leaned towards that sentiment. While I wholeheartedly agree that America is much better off than many many other countries in the world, living paycheck to paycheck, not being able to pay bills, and sometimes having to decide whether to spend money on gas or food isn't easy at all to live with on a daily basis.

Basically it states that poor people in America really arent poor and actually live comfortably compared to other countries, but it did state that it was about the average poor person and not representative of all poor people.  Some people do face food shortage and are unable to pay their rent and bills in a timely manner. 2 reasons given for children in poverty was absent fathers and the parents not working enough. The article also said that 25% of poor are first gen. immigrants or their children one-tenth are undocumented immigrants. The skills of immigrants need to be increased and undocumented immigration needs to be reduced.
