The picture inspires me to practice Magis or choosing to do the more loving option because it really highlights compassion and love. Given the privilege to help others, we must remember to stand with our community and do our best to lend a helping hand instead of marginalizing and silencing others. We must foster mutual love, growth, and healing among the community in order to rise up against any challenge that we may face.

With all the novelty that the world can offer us, I should always keep in mind that I am not the only one who deserves new hopes and chances. It inspires me to be a steward that will spread the kind of love that grants people the chance to start anew or to continue unraveling more of what they love doing; in a sense, it reminds me that we are all capable of giving a kind of love that keeps on giving.

In order to allow children and the future generations to continue feeling a sense of security and content, everyone must strive to practice the spirit of Magis through selflessness in their actions in order to create a more compassionate society.

This is a photo from one of my favorite books called Hope for the Flowers. The story, represented by this picture inspires me to practice the spirit of Magis because it reminds me that it is through our choices to transform, to be better, and to do the loving option that there is hope for "the flowers" - hope for the other. When I am reminded that my life is not just my own, I become inspired to do better, realizing that I have the capability to do my part in the world, and lovingly at that.

It would be great to be part of a community that cares and supports each other so that no one is left behind or suffers. I recognize that each and every one of us can play a role in our society and our environment a better place to live in. And a great way to achieve this is by choosing the more loving option.

Practicing the spirit of Magis, for me, is like planting seeds. When we choose to become a more loving person, and in turn choose the more loving option, we create a metaphorical chain of love and kindness that the people we've interacted with spread to the other people around them. By doing this, we plant seeds of love that have the potential to grow into bigger plants, which then have the ability to produce their own seeds.

Shortly after the news broke out, large sums of money from the rich community were raised for the rehabilitation of the establishment, and it made me wonder how easy they gave money for this Cathedral in a short span of time, but find it more difficult to donate money for poverty and other issues that concerns people. This particular incident was my turning point from dreaming to be a businessperson for the money, to be one for people instead (choosing the more loving option).

For me, the idea of Magis can be witnessed through being comfortable in uncomfortable situations — we learn to adapt and become versatile with whatever life throws at us, and, at the same time, we don't close out other options that are new and unfamiliar.

When I think of Magis, I can easily think of my comfort zone, which is the ocean, because of its vastness, strength, and mystery; yet it can also be a balance between life and death. In life, there are a lot of challenges that one has to face in order to reach the ultimate goal of Magis. As a swimmer, I can tell you that its training regimen can be quite gruesome. You keep swimming thousands of kilometers in order to improve yourself (body and mind) for the next competition. Thinking of this makes you wanna give up, but going back into the depths and the unknown day after day is what would truly keeps the spirit of Magis alive. It is this unknown entity that inspires me to dive deep to know more and discover how would this information would change society, for better or for worse.

Just like in my life, if I have never shifted out and tried out this course that I'm in today, I would have never discovered my other passion that became a stepping stone to do more for this world. In a swimmer's metaphor, dive in and explore the unknown. you may never truly experience life until you dive deep.

Magis, for me, is something I learned while studying here in the Ateneo. It is about choosing the loving option, and I learned that sometimes that option is also choosing myself. I would go to the Church of the Gesu and reflect on my decisions and what my goals are for the day or the week. Going here would also be a quiet break when everything becomes too fast paced. Since we are working in an online setting, sometimes I forget to choose myself and to take a break. With that, I am reminded to practice Magis by looking at this photo I took back during one of my visits to the Gesu.

The overarching concept of Magis can be likened to the "domino effect." If you push the first domino it sets off a chain reaction and the rest of them fall down too. Acts of kindness are like that. This inspires me to practice Magis because one push or one action fueled with kindness can lead to an unlimited impact.

However, we also need to keep in mind that we should bring others up too so that everyone can have the opportunity to grow. With this, a racetrack would remind me to practice magis. Oftentimes, we are tempted to use the shortcut route since it’s the most convenient and easiest path to reach your end goal. Thus, the racetrack would remind me that it’s okay to take the more difficult route because although it may take longer, it will be fulfilling because you were able to do more by reaching out and accompanying them as you go through hurdles towards the finish line (end goal). Magis is not all about doing more to be the best, but by doing more as a loving person with thoughtful action and mind for others.

A couple of years back when I first heard of the term magis, I didn't fully understand what it meant. Then, I had the misconception that it simply meant choosing to do more and pushing yourself beyond what you're used to. And all along I was under the impression that it meant working to be more as a means to gain personal glory -- being more proactive, being excellent in class, having a lot of org involvement, and such. But apparently, magis is way more than that: magis is not doing more for yourself but doing more by choosing the more loving option -- for others and for Christ. For this reason, I find that it is this photo that reminds of magis -- people who appear to be coming together to love and support each other. A photo that inspires unity and a common goal of lifting each other up. I believe looking at this will constantly remind me of what the true essence of magis is and, in turn, inspire me to reflect it in the choices I make every day.

The person who inspires me the most to practice Magis is my Mom, because I remember when she told me as a child that she would stop working in her office because she wants to take care of me and my siblings. I was already seven years old at the time, so I did not need her at home as much as a dependent infant would, and yet she still chose to be with me because she wanted to be able to be close as I grew up, even if it was at the expense of leaving her work and friends. Choosing the most loving option and going beyond what is expected of me is inspired by how my Mom placed me as more important than any career she could have, and I want to be able to make the most loving decisions for myself and for others.

Given family's role in our upbringing, where most of our values our taught, being more loving and caring towards ourselves and towards others becomes somewhat of an application of those values we were taught, in which we treat everyone like family.

When Typhoon Ulysses hit the Philippines one of the cities greatly affected was Marikina City. Several people lost their homes to the floods and with everything that had happened during the pandemic the people in Marikina had literally lost it all. With this, my friends and I arranged a relief operation wherein we donated gallons of water, food packages, and clothes to poor communities in Marikina City. I am beyond grateful to have surrounded myself with a group of friends who practice the spirit of Magis. They continue to inspire me to be the most loving version that I can possibly be.

Back in 2018, I used to run a small business back in with one of my best friends called Meliora Cebu. Meliora means in pursuit of better, and we sold reusable utensils and straws, shampoo and conditioner bars, burrito pouches, and bamboo cotton buds. The photo above are the community of mothers (and their children) from Banawa, Cebu, and they were the ones who crafted our burrito pouches. We tried to support them through selling the pouches for their extra income. While my friend and I were not masters at starting a business, the whole idea of trying to partner and support a community is definitely something that will always remind me to do something more for others in every endeavor I take on. This photo also reminds me that many communities are in need of assistance in some way and one must just reach out and be open to collaborating with them (not just imposing a solution, but co-creating one with them).

From my recent engagements from NSTP class, I have realized how our small actions affect a person. It may be small to me but it is big for someone else. This reminds me to practice magis, because once we touch someone's heart, its like hugging God whom I've made proud of. It is really a challenge to open up to others, but the outcome is amazing and the feeling can really can spread through the community.

This photo was taken when me and my friends visited and taught orphaned children back in 2018. Looking back at it now, we were a little inexperienced with teaching however the children were still enthusiastic and receptive to us. Every time a child started telling stories and being comfortable to act like themselves, it made me happy to see that we were able to give them a safe space even for a short amount of time. I always had a difficult time interacting with children, however after this experience and seeing these children's desire to learn and have fun, I want to say I've become more understanding of children and their perspective. This photo reminds me that I have the opportunity to create safe spaces not only for children but for others as well. Magis is in continuing to choose to be compassionate and loving to others despite of hardships.

This photo features a sticker I always see on my wall every morning. It inspires me to practice the spirit of Magis because for me, choosing to love learning more means I become a more loving person who is willing to be more open-minded, understanding, and compassionate towards other people. This is because I noticed all throughout my life that the bad actions people tend to do, such as discrimination (e.g. racism, sexism, etc.), usually come from fear, ignorance, and most importantly a lack of willingness to learn and understand things outside of their comfort zones.
