Why did people see a need for social reform in the 1800s?

People saw a need for social reform in the 1800s because industrialization and city growth caused many problems.

Many workers faced long hours, low pay, and unsafe conditions, while cities became overcrowded and dirty. The text says, "urban growth led to overcrowded, dangerous, and unsanitary living conditions," and "workers went on strike in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to demand a 10-hour work day." It also explains that the Second Great Awakening inspired people to help fix these problems. This shows that people wanted change because life in cities and factories was difficult. Workers protested for better jobs, and religious leaders encouraged people to improve society. In the 1800s, reformers worked to make life better by fighting for fair pay, safer workplaces, and healthier cities.

Women began to fight for rights in the mid 19th century for more equal rights and opportunity. Before this, women had very few rights, and were viewed as dependent on men as the text states. They wanted equal rights because it was extremely unfair; they wanted the right to be educated, the right to vote, and the right to own land. To sum it up, it was unfair and women had to fight for equality.

How did writers and artists revive and create a completely fresh American culture within the 1800s? The authors and artists of this century worked to create art and literature based on the nature-inspired works of Roman and Greek times, which were vastly different from the other countries of the time. According to Discovery Education, "American authors and intellectuals began to build a culture that was independent of Britain and the ancient European masters." Creatives of the time were essential to the formation of an independent American style. Overall, writers and painters, among other creators, were key in transforming old ideas into an all-new, all-American culture.

Some of the ideas that emerged were treating prisoners and emotionally damaged people more humanely, meanwhile creating utopias. Eric says that mentally ill people "were not locked in closets like before." This is one example of this new thinking about treating people. To sum it up, the social ideas that emerged during this time period were more humane treatment of prisoners and individuals with special needs, and an increasing effort by the Quakers to create a Utopia.

The abolition movement was mainly about eliminating slavery as a whole, rather than as individually. Abolitionists called out the government for calling all men equal, yet still accepting slavery. In the text it states, "They called for an end to slavery with immediate emancipation." This shows the abolitionist wanted immediate results.
