The man and woman never speak to each other during the ride to the bar, and they never touched each other either. When the man got drunk, he started complaining about having married at age 18, and the wife pretends that she doesn't hear. This shows that the man and wife aren't very social with each other, and that they're started to show regret that they've married young.

The subject of the couple’s separation can be seen by the quote “was the perfect silence they preserved”, indicating that they did not want to talk to each other or didn’t want anything to do with one another. There is also no physical contact between the two, conveying that they feel ‘weird’ doing so. In the dining area, the couple has a conversation and the tone of the conversation shows the reader that they don't converse often and aren't too pleased with the other person's responses.

The reader's first impression of Michael may be that he's unloving, as he repeatedly ignores his wife and children and drinks despite reminders about their lodging. As the episode develops, however, the reader may start to dislike him as he starts bargaining his own wife for money. This is seen as very cruel and the reader may grow a grudge against Michael.

At the bar, the man drank a lot and was drunk, which led him to spill out the reality of his marriage. He confessed that he regrets getting married at the age of 18, which suggests he is now not at all interested in his marriage and relationship with this woman. Additionally, during his conversation at the bar, it can be seen that the man and his wife has minimal emotional and physical connection, and there is a sense of neglect between each other.

In the beginning of the story, Micheal is portrayed as a person who supports a family himself, so the reader might feel sympathy towards him. He is also seen as an alcohol addict, which makes him look like a careless person. Towards the ending of the story, the reader might feel a sense of empathy as well as anger for Michael, as he sold his wife to another man, but only did this so she could have a better place. He also needed the money.

The story introduces Michael Henchard to the readers as a man of poor personality who's developed a horrid drinking habit. This drunk behavior often leads him to rambling on hurtful comments about his wife and complaining openly regardless of whether his wife was present or not. As the episode develops, the man ends up auctioning off his wife and daughter mindlessly, showing that he shared no care or hinted at a solid foundation of a relationship in his marriage.

But because we've been practicing inference this year, I was able to do the questions without much problem :)
What activities would you like to help you reach the desired learning objectives?
The comprehension questions given in this website helped me better understand, as they made me look at the excerpt in an analytical way that allowed me a better comprehension of the excerpt.
