If food is permitted to be used in the classroom, this activity is sweet and fun. The teacher starts by opening up an individual size bag of M&Ms. Each color in the bag represents a different question. You can make up your own questions or look for the game online that already has questions made for you. The teacher shares about herself/himself by answering the corresponding question for each M&M.  Then allow the students to take turns answering the questions. After answering the question, the student gets to eat the M&M.  There are about 20 M&Ms in a bag so you can adjust the game by the number of students and the time allotted.

First, there is a laminated page by the door with pictures of a hug, handshake, giving a "pound", doing a happy dance, a bow/curtsey, a wave, etc.
As the students are lined up against the wall, the student chooses how they wish to greet their teacher by pointing at the picture and the teacher reciprocates.

This not only lets the child choose how they wish to be greeted but can also be a way for the teacher to see how that child is feeling that day. For example, the student who usually does a happy dance every morning chooses a wave instead. Another relationship building strategy will celebrate the age(s) of the children in the groups. After finding out how old each child is, I will ask "How did you celebrate your last birthday?" and folllow-up with "What do you want/would you like to do for your birthday this year?" It will help build relationship when I post a monthly calendar board listing all my students' birthdays. My birthday would be posted as well in September. Doing an All About Me page for the first session seems like a fun way to get to know my students and for the students to get to know me! I also definitely plan to greet my students at the beginning of each tutoring session because it fosters a respectful learning environment and shows that I am excited to see them! In addition, asking some of the relationship-building questions is also something I plan to do.  A general relationship-building strategy I plan to do is show up as my authentic self daily.
