This mini-unit is intended to allow students to critically explore social commentary via the graffiti-type art of Banksy, who self-describes as a “ 'quality vandal,' challenging the authority of political and art institutions on both the right and the left." Additionallly, students will walk away with a well reasoned understanding of Banksy and subversive or controversial art and its place in society as a commentary or change agent.

This body of articles and videos runs the bias gamut: from fawning to neutral to critiquing. My hope is that this mini-unit will provide robust discussions on topics including the actual societal contructs Banksy is satirizing , as well as his methods, his commercial succes, his anonymity, and whatever else the students can think of.
Students will keep a journal for personal response as well as notes as they interact with each piece. We will have large and small group discussions along the way, and for their final product students will curate six of their favorite pieces of art and will write a mock HL essay on their chosen set.
