Cut two slots on front of box (one at top and one at bottom). Cut a piece of extra cardboard from lid and tape to top of top slot and bottom of bottom slot. Cardboard should be curved on inside so index card gets forced out of the bottom.

Create different set of cards that use a different rule. One one side write the input number and on the other side write the output number. Students will put cards from the set in one by one and notice the pattern and find the rule. They should have a black input output chart with them to fill in so they can visually see the pattern.

Give students a blank input output chart and then rule and they will need to figure out the output based on the rule. They should use the function machine to physically see that something is happening to the input number.

How I use it in MY classroom

This activity will be used in a small group setting because I do math centers in my classroom. I plan on making different sets of cards that vary in difficulty to ensure all students are being challenged. This is a great tool to use for my struggling students so that they can see the number changing based on the given rule. This activity could definitely be used whole group for an introduction of functions.
