Henry II becomes Lord of Ireland (1171)

The pope granted King Henry II power over Ireland, to strengthen ties between Ireland and the Catholic Church. He went on to create the English commmon laws, that are still being practiced today.

Introducing Catholicism to the Celts (5th century)

In the 5th century St. Patrick introduced Roman Catholicism to the Celts, because St. Patrick was healvily commited to his religion. Catholicism became a big part of Irish culture, as many poeple converted. He showed them how to pray and worship God, and showed poeple tacticts that are still used in churches to this day.

The Treaty of Limerick (1691)

The Irish were forced to sign the treaty as a trick from the British, that led to British control. The British then confiscated close to all of their land, and prevented them from freely exercising worship, attending school, and entering proffessions in medicine, or law. The treaty also prevented the Irish from owning guns, pistols, or swords. This treaty was so signifigant because, it ended the 1689 to 1691 Williamite War in Ireland.

The British Passed the Penal Laws (1695)

This law was a law that had a series of regulations that ensured that the Irish Catholics would occupy a subservient place in society to the British protestants. This law was in place to stop people from committing crimes, it does this by showing fear and making people fear if they do commit a crime. This is important today so that people don't commit crimes and do bad things that could get them in serious trouble because of the fear of consequences.

King Henry VIII Established the Church of England (1400's)

In 1400's King Henry VIII broke away from catholic church and established church of England, when he broke away from teh pope. He needed to make this church so, he could get a divorce from his wife, who could not birth him a son. He wanted his legacy to live on through a male heir. He could not get a divorce because it was against his religion in the Catholic church.

Oliver Cromwell Overthrew King Charles I (1649)

After the civil war had ended, King charles was beheaded in 1949. Oliver Cromwel then assumed power, as the lord protector of the Commonwealth of England. He opposed the idea of governmet, and for 11 years, England didn't have a monarchy. While he was in rule, Irish land ownsership declined from 90 percent, to just 3 percent throught the 17th century.

Northern Ireland plantation (1600)

The plantation system made Northern Ireland very productive and it became a very rich colony for the English land owners. This was important because the south didn't have as much land as the north so the north was able to grow more crops and become more wealthier than the south. Plantation isn't around today but it did help grow northern Ireland to what it is today.

Great Britain strengthen ties with Ireland (1801)

while strengthening their ties they even further passed the Act of Union. England, Scotland, and Whales had joined together as the country of great Britain in 1707. It was important they strengthen ties the two states have a high level of trade between them. Now they have a good government partnership which means they can work together to get through challenges.
