Timothy Winters Needs Advice by

Imagine that you are Timothy Winters.
Why could you be miserable?
What might life be like for you at school?
Would you have any friends?
Would you be bullied?
What would you like The Welfare State to do for you?

TASK: Write a letter on padlet to A friend asking them to help you, use evidence from the poem to guide you. You can also use imagination and fill in the details they do not know.

The Welfare State is a wonderful idea but can I really rely upon or get access to it with my troubled home-life. Although my Master will often tell us to look out for those less fortunate in society how can they forget about children like myself who have the same dreams and desire to achieve as everyone else?

People like me, live miserable lives. Always forgotten by society, treated like the gum stuck on the sidewalks. Are we not human? What have I don't to deserve such life? It isn't fair who people can just be born rich, never having to worry about their future, having enough food on the table, or just having clothes to wear? Sure, we have the Welfare State, but can they really help everyone like us? My one and only wish is for everyone, not just me and you, but anyone who has to go through what I have, to be helped. School, or even society now is like the medieval times, with the importance of the hierarchy. I always thought that school was the one place I may be able to fit in. Oh how gullible I used to be. They say that I have eyes of a football, ears of a bomb, and teeth like splinters. No one realises what pain i go through each day, even having to work just as hard as those who have the dream life. They complain about their lives, just wait till they experience mine.

I try my hardest to help people below me in society, but its hard when your scraping along the bottom as it is. You would think that after all the tragedy we had gone through together that we might think first not for ourselves but for eachother. but alas not.

I'm fading. Soon, I will be forgotten for eternity. What have I done? Why does it have to be me? Can't people see? It's unfair to see how ignorant people can be. There are millions like me, and yet people don't see. Are we not human? Like everyone else? What's the point of a Welfare State when all they do is just watch? We're being ignored like dirt on a sidewalk, like garbage on a road. People in school see be as a normal kid, but behind that mask lies suffering and torture. I can't afford the simple necessities in life, and yet I am still invisible. We have gone back to the medieval times. Where society just walks around midlessley, not with a care for the word. We walk around the deserted streets scavenging for hope, a hope that is lost.

The Welfare Workers have set a morally correct goal, but they fail to reach me in my dirty shack. Why I am I so unfortunate compared to all of you while you do not even bat an eye at me. I need support, I need help and instead you shame me, a troubled individual who knows not of hot meals or warm showers, only the cold desolate night. Am I not allowed to succeed and flourish like everyone else with a head start? Even my parents see nothing in me. This is nowhere near fair.

It amazes me how much I am forgotten and left out no matter how hard I try to gain attention. How hard is it to get attention you ask? Well, these people pay more attention to an ant than me. We are simply looked over, I am so furious. All I wish is that someone, anyone i don't care who, helps us. Theres no point in this 'Welfare State' if nobody is going to take notice, or if they are just going to choose which children to save, to feed, to take care of, and leave the rest to fend for themselves, sleeping in sacks, starving and cold. The teachers at school expect me to work just as hard as those over privileged swots. Their stomachs are filled with three meals a day, plus supper, and i'm stuck trying to keep enough energy to walk home. This is nowhere near the idea of 'fair'.

I'm not alone feeling so forgotten, there are hundreds, no thousands of others in the same situation. Fading into the backround, more and more each day. How can they not see us, struggling with hunger, stranded on the streets, alone. Dear welfare state, when I first heard of you I was overjoyed, happy for the first time in years, a chance to be saved, but instead you let us drown. How could you? Every assembly our Head Teacher speaks about how we should always try our best to help those in need, those not as lucky as we are... don't they see? There is a person just like that that doesn't even hide in plain sight, but stands out. How do they not see? How do they not see what kind of situation I'm in. I have been hurt by everyone. The people who clear pathways for me, the teachers and adults who are scared to even let their kids near me, and what hurt most of all was when my mother left me. She was my last hope at a normal life, and now... she is gone, she disappeared into thin air the minute things got hard.
