The age of imperialism gave rise to competition and conflicts amongst powerful nations and suffering amongst weaker and exploited nations. Resources were taken from the people who rightly own them. Animals were hunted for greed and wealth. Land were taken from the inhabitants that lived on it. People were conquered using weapons such as the maxim gun. Opposition was brutally suppressed. Exploitation for greed was commonly practiced. As you can see, the things that are listed above are enough to prove why Age of Imperialism deserve a bad rap.
