The northern states abolished slavery in 1804, and made it illegal to import slaves from Africa in 1808. But slavery was stil very active even though it was forbidden to hold someone as a slave. In the years to come some slaves held secret meetings where they planned attacks and rebellions to their slave owners. Most of these rebbelions failed.
