Monday 17th- started of in the theory room where I wrote up about some things I’m going to do during FMP and my overall evaluation of the terms; this is one of the things I’m going to try doing through the six weeks. After the break I had a lesson on democracy, I learnt many different things in that lesson and it was also nice to get my word out about something I feel quite strong on. After that I had a practical lesson which started off with basic warmups and the learnt about the book we were going to be performing for the FMP, which is heavily linked to family’s. We started off giving roles and I decided to go for the stage director which I think could be fun because I can have my opinion on how the set looks and also organising a lot of different things. Then we ended it off with reading the book at multiple people choosing the characters so we could get a further insight about the characters and book as a whole.

Thursday 20th- Didn’t really do too much to do with FMP, because we started of the day with a cost of living crisis; to voice our opinions and take charge. Then in the afternoon we did the FMP proposal, unfortunately all of mine from last time didn’t get saved but I needed up finishing all of it in that one lesson.

Stage manager research

Some things I have to take control of as my role of stage manager are scheduling rehearsals, communicating with cast and maybe even at some times call out cues and asking people to do certain things; for example different actions or when to come or go off stage.

So one of the main things I’ve seen in research about stage managing is, that they cover a lot of communication between everyone, which can range to the people sorting out tech to the director or actors. Also that I would work as if a right hand man to the director; to help make the scene or play look like what they want it to; so pretty much overseeing the play as a whole.

I think this is a good role for me because I can freely express my opinion about what and who should be on the stage at any time, and I work closely with the director so I can make sure its looks like what they want it to look like.

Physical Theatre is when the play, or piece of any kind uses mainly physical movement to tell a story instead of a script or music. This style of theatre could also include mime or dance as they cam both convey a story through movement instead of words

The main reason this is on the pallet is because its the main theatre style in the book we are doing a performance "things I know to be true" so clearly it would be a good fit; but also I enjoy this style of theatre because it involves lots of movement, which is helpful for mr because I can got bored very easily.

The main theme of the book is family, and what problems and secrets they have, it mainly focuses on naturalism however some moments do include non-naturalistic moments. This has also been made into a film however they had to adapt it to an American style because it's originally set in Australia as it was written by Andrew Bovell.

It has many good reviews by many people as apparently it was described as being "an easy watch"-(information from wikipedia), it has also had many nominations as a movie for the best supporting role.

Im very excited to do this piece because the main focus is family and secrets, so I'm hoping when I get my character that I can play him convincingly and do as much research as possible. I also just generally find the book interesting as there is a decent plot and the characters are not Melo dramatic so it seems like a real story, which I like.

My understanding of my character at this point before research is that Mark is slightly disjointed from his family. When coming out to Fran and Bob he is met with a lot of misunderstanding and anger. Fran states "so go get out wear a dress if you have to- but not in my house I don't want to see it" and" but when you come back as a woman I will look for my son in her face, and mourn his loss". So after this Mark transitions to Mia, and her family do not/ will not support her during the difficult times.

Everyone found out that Mark was a woman when he came home from somewhere and another family member made a joke about how the only thing that would surprise him now was if Mark was a women, and with that the truth was revealed. They tried to be supportive about it but couldn't accept it, so they tried to convince him not to transition. So with that Mark told them that he was moving to Sydney to live his new life as Mia, a new person.

Mark was always the odd one out in the family, for example in the monologue where he's hiding in a tree to avoid garden work he sees over the family, and one major thing was that he sees his mum smoking, which was a secret. She only smokes when she can't figure out an issue; which was what do do with Mark cause she expected he was gay and he just broke up with his girlfriend; these two are probably related because unlike his family members he usually lasted long in relationships.

When it was time for the monologue I tried focusing on building mark as a character so I added my research into account.

Friday 26th- We started the day off with another physical warmup as it had sort of become a routine at this point which was just doing some running around the room and dancing to some songs, we also did stretches. Doing this everyday helped because it would always wake us up and because we were doing a physical movement play it prepared our bodies for the rest of the day. These second task was to be in a pair and read out our monologues and then get feedback on them; this was extremely helpful to me as I could implement the feedback straight away so it helped improve my character.

This is the overall evaluation of our play and this term, which overall took 2 months to fully complete. At the beginning of the term I thought that there would be many challenges, some being for myself learning my lines and be able to confidently play my character because at the time I knew nothing about the play or any of the characters. Another challenge that I thought would happen is the rehearsals not being enough time, because during these 2 month we had a lot of time of because of half terms and bank holidays; and for me personally I didn't know if I would be able to focus enough during the rehearsal time. And finally the last major challenges for me was staging, lighting and sound effects, this is because I didn't know how to do any of these things so I knew I needed to do research on them and get some general knowledge about these subjects.

Overall the rehearsals went better as expected as in most lessons there was instant feedback so I could either improve my character or work on what I was doing in the scene, one thing that I know I can improve on for next time is professionalism because I feel like if I took it more seriously at the beginning then I wouldn't of had to everything last minute. For the first 5 weeks I managed to stay on top of my reflective logs by completing thing as soon as I finished the lesson, this helped in the long run because I can clearly see what I changed about my character and it also made it easier to give myself feedback. One rehearsal that helped me a lot was in the last week before the performance when we went outside and all of us performed our monologues Infront of everyone, this was especially helpful for me as it built my confidence up, also I got feedback which I implemented straight away which made my scene look and sound better; for example my tone of which I am saying certain things, because I only changed this slightly yet it set a completely different pace for the rest of my monologue.

I think the only thing I would change about the process is taking the rehearsal time more seriously as it would've boosted my confidence, by knowing my lines and it would've also given me more time to go into greater research about my character so I could understand him better.

From my research and what other people told me about my character mark, he was shy and kept to himself but he was also a great role model to his younger siblings, I tried to implement this by not moving of the floor when performing my monologue and also never really raising my voice or using anger.

In the performance we didn't really have any sound effects, all we used was a slow paced song for the start when we were mainly doing dance and movement. The song was played throughout some people monologues as it also ran through my first speech which opened up the piece. This helped the piece as it got rid of the quietness and made it less awkward to perform on the stage.

Most of the changes came about by just watching each other perform and by going over the performance multiple times until it was good enough or we implemented the changes we wanted to. So overall the changes came from feedback and trial and error.

So when we started the performance I wasn't enjoying it as the play isn't typically something that I enjoy but as we kept performing it and research it I changed my mind, because I got to know the play better so then I could understand the characters and plot better. The performance went really well as there were no mess ups and the entire thing went smooth and just as planned; personally I was really nervous about performing but I managed to reassure myself that I know everything and everything will go well, which thankfully it did. Overall I enjoyed the whole process as it boosted my confidence in being able to perform well and to not be nervous, and getting a lot of feedback also helped me as now I know I can go to my classmates if I ever need help with anything that I am doing.

Parameters

"A limit or boundary which defines the scope of a particular process or activity..."

Money/Budget: No matter what anyone says, money DOES make the world go round! Every production needs an exact budget to pay for cast, crew, set design, props, costume, make-up and potential venue hire.

Audience Capacity: Before any form of marketing is done for a production you must ensure you know the capacity of your theatre space.

Student Absence/Health & Safety: Student's absence from rehearsals can greatly hinder a show. Additionally, risk assessments must be filled out in order to insure their performers.

Time Constraints: All cast and crew must be aware of the time limitations before a show. This is pertinent, as knowing the amount of rehearsal time is vital for performers. In doing so, they're able to meticulously plan enough rehearsal time to perfect their performance pieces.

Length Of Show/Number Of Pieces: Whilst constructing a variety show, the directors must ensure the number of pieces add up to time that's both not too short and not too long. The average length of a variety show is 1 hour 30 minutes with one intermission.

Requirements

"A thing that is needed or wanted..."

1) Performers (aka students):

2) Rehearse Performance Material: Without the necessary rehearsal time performers can become nervous and lose confidence. Which in turn can cause any performer to forget lines/choreography, radiate a lacklustre stage presence and create an overall subpar show.

3) Learn Lines/Song Lyrics: Memorising lines increases confidence, which in turn creates a more impactful and professional performance.

4) Lighting & Sound: Timings and cues for technical staff are vital in order to perfectly time sound effects and blackouts.

5) Audience/Tickets: Without sufficient ticket distribution, shows run the risk of losing money.

6) Venue: Any venue chosen must be able to support the needs of your performance (wire-work, trapdoor, pyrotechnics etc).

7) Costume/Make-Up/Props: Quality costuming, make-up and props present a level of professionalism with any performance.

Receiving/Repertory Theatre

Receiving House: Receiving house theatre spaces simply provide their performance spaces for other companies to rent. These particular theatre only expense is the theatre itself and its staff, as all cast members, props, costumes, publicity etc have been supplied by the external company. Prime examples include Milton Keynes Theatre, Grand Opera House York, The Theatre Royal and the Lyceum Theatre.

Repertory Theatre: Unlike its counterpart, repertory theatre use their performance spaces to produce their own productions, rarely opening to external companies. These particular theatres have a tendency to be more expensive to view. This is due to the theatre's need to pay off any expenses required in order to produce an original production from scratch (costume, set, lighting, cast, stagehands, FOH staff, marketing, programmes etc). Venues which slot into this category include The Birmingham Rep, Leighton Buzzard Theatre and The Old Rep.

we were limited on the rehearse time we had especially with the bank holidays, but I could of over come this by rehearsing on my own, also we wanted to perform in a theatre but sadly we did have enough budget .

We had to think about costume so we raised money doing a cake sale to help us.
