Growing up in Poverty, Makes you more susceptible to living in Poverty as an Adult!

Poverty rates are an ever-increasing issue in the United States. According to NCCP.org, "Adults who were poor during childhood are much more likely to be poor in early and middle adulthood than are those who were never poor" (Wagmiller & Adelman, 2009). This leads to individuals who live below the poverty line, to find difficulty getting above it. Poverty in childhood, uncontrollable for the child as it is, still affects children in ways that may impact their future. Children who grow up in low-income households are more likely to experience hardships that children from higher-income families may not. "Growing up in poverty can negatively impact a child’s developing brain and lead to problems in school and poor health and academic outcomes." (Parkay, 2019), these are simply examples of how poverty effects children in schools.

References :
Wagmiller, R. L., & Adelman, R. M.
Homelessness and Education

Coupled with living under the poverty line, homelessness and government assistance is a controversial topic in America. Large cities find ways to eradicate their "homeless" population, children who face homelessness, and may be benefiting from the government assistance received by their parents, also face difficulties in their school life and education. "the need to overcome health problems, hunger, and the difficulty of obtaining clothing and school supplies." (Parkay,2019), are just some of the things that homeless children may face, the inability to provide proper school records also pose to be an issue for children without proper housing. Children under government assistance face bullying, and social isolation from their peers. Poverty has become almost a shameful thing in society, and often times we punish those who live within it by isolation or ridicule.

Reference :
Parkay, F. W. (2019).

"In 2017, 21 percent of children (15 million) lived in families below the poverty level ($24,600 for a family of two adults and two children)" (Parkay, 2019). This shows the side of statistics, what you don't see from these numbers is the amount of children who will continue their lives to drop out, turn to substance abuse or, continue to live below the poverty level. The difficulty that one must face to climb above the level of poverty is seemingly, unachievable.

Reference:
Parkay, F. W. (2019). Becoming a Teacher (11th Edition).

The Mckinney act, " requires states to provide homeless children with free public education"(Parkay, 2019), this means removing the obstacles that would pose to be difficult for homeless children to attend and register for school. This act was passed to ensure that these children acquire a proper education and to help them achieve the best way that they could.

Reference:
Parkay, F. W.
Why Poverty is a Significant issue in our School Systems

Often times, students whose families struggle financially may stray away from sharing their emotions and hurt with friends and trusted adults. This can lead to depression and a decline in academics and an internal struggle within the student. Poverty is an important issue because the individuals that live below the poverty line often rely on community assistance such as, food banks and community luncheons, to feed and care for their families. Poverty effects more than just the parents and students who are affected by it. Poverty can often affect a community.

As a future educator, I will not judge. I feel like as someone who wants to be an educator, that should be obvious, but in the world we live in it is evident that judgement from teachers and administrators lives within out education system. I will participate and actively encourage students, parents and members of my community to participate in community food banks and free lunch activities for these students and their parents. I will be a safe space, abiding by the code I am to uphold, for students to turn to if needed. I know that I cant fix our economic issues, and nor can I pull every student out of poverty. If I can however, help in small ways, I will do my best to make an impact.
