Thirteen Reasons Why is a American teen drama web television series developed for Netflix by Brian Yorkey, based on the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. In this show they dealt with serious topics including: suicide, bullying, and sexual abuse. It's set in a high school with struggling students. Although most problems brought up in this series do depict current issues occurring in this era; however, some images are exaggerated to create a more exciting show. The purpose of this analysis is to discuss if the drama conforms to postmodernism. Due to much controversy within societies view of this series, I intend to discuss and inform the reader on the possible outlooks.

The story is expressed through the main character Clay Jenson, a highschool student who was once friends with recent deceased friend Hannah Baker. He walks the audience through the various tapes written by Hannah. Instead of the most known suicide notes, Hannah chose to share her reasonings through cassette tapes.

Tyler is one who would be seen on these tapes correct? Wrong. Tyler has a spot on this tape because he was stalking and taking candid pictures of Hannah that got out.

Throughout the show there are specific lighting techniques to create a certain feel for the audience. "Manipulation of the lighting strongly affects the tone of a scene and the emotional mood that is conveyed by that scene to viewers." In this show, they use lighting to help the audience get a feel of people's emotions from the times Hannah was still alive to the times after her passing. With the scenes containing her, the setting appears to be brighter and happier. Scenes without Hannah, are dark and gloomy. This gives an effect of making the audience feel as the only "bright" times were when she was still alive. We believe the characters are miserable and sad without her just by the lighting alone.

Opinion on Series

This program, in my opinion, is very helpful in expressing the epidemic of sucide. This has become a major cause of death in this world and it is about time someone talks about it. Many think it is too gruesome to a viewer's eye; however, I believe the world is just to scared to see the actual horrific illness causes innocent lives to end. It brings awareness to what the effects of suicide can actually do to the victim and even the bystanders. It also shows people how painful words and actions can be. Even if it doesn’t seem serious, it could just be “the last straw” that tips them over the edge.

The moral of the show is to show people struggling that they matter and they are enough. It shows that there are other options and there will always be people to reach out to even if your feel alone. It expresses the long term effects of suicide, not only to the individual but to the peers and family members in their life.

The audience is able to recognize their own fallibility in the characters. It relates close to high school students, being each character is a student. They go through the same problems throughout their lives as one would through their high school experiences. This creates a connection with the viewers causing them to relate more to the show keeping them engaged.

Camera shots have a major effect on the feeling of a film. In this show, the close ups create dramatic effects that help the storyline. It shows us close up raw emotions that even effect our feelings of the situation. It creates sympathy, anger, or affection for characters. This keeps you persistent on the mood between scenes.
