The majority of the interviewees claimed that they usually speak Friulian at home and with friends and not, for example, at their workplace. This is because Friulian is very connected with traditions and family life: in fact, most people who speak Friulian don’t learn it at school, but they learn it from their parents.

Considering the results of the interviews, we have noticed that it is mostly the elderly and adults who speak Friulian while the majority of young people are not able to speak it, but can understand it.

However, there is a minority of young people who know Friulian, but it usually differs from the one spoken by the older generations and is often seen as non-spontaneous and “Italianized”.

Unfortunately, there is the very common feeling that Friulian is slowly dying. This might be because nowadays many parents don’t pass it down to their children because they think they do not need it.
