Aaron: I feel like leaders are born with it. You may not know your a leader until a certain situation happens and you just take control, leaving you that feeling. Some from the beginning just show leadership qualities. Leaders will learn to make themselves stronger leaders throughout the years but I certainly feel like you have to have something inside you that allows you to lead. Some will argue that you can learn to lead and that anyone could be a leader. My feeling on that is to lead, you need a certain type of person, with a certain types of qualities. I think people who say they learned to lead, were still were born with it but needed to shape those qualities over time. Some people are just not the leadership type and there's nothing wrong that. Leader or not the world needs both types. Either way born or made, leaders are an important part of life. We need them to help steer situations in directions that they need to go.

Patty:
In my opinion, I do believe leaders are both born and made. Why else would we need to take this class? Many people are born with leadership qualities and when given positive feedback and learning material they will flourish in a leadership role. I also believe, leadership skills can be taught to a person who is willing to learn them. According to author, Brigette Hyacith-these attributes are a combination of personality, character, skill, communicative ability, and emotional intelligence. Therefore a leader is born, developed, skilled in communications, and cultivated through life experiences (Hyacinth, 2014). Everyone one has their own strengths and weaknesses. If people are willing to learn the necessary skills to lead and make an effort to make their weaknesses stronger than they can become a strong leader.
Not everyone who leads, should be. Some people who are put into a position of leadership should not be in there. There are many reasons why they are put in that position. For example, seniority. They may have put in many years at a company, and to be rewarded they were moved into the position without having leadership skills. Sometimes classes that are offered to people in a leadership role do not help, because they may be resistant to change. These qualities should be recognized by their leader and corrected. We all know that bad managers may cause good people to leave.

People who have been taught the necessary skills to be a leader can help create other successful leaders by leading by example. Knowledge is contagious!!!

Reference
Hyacinth, B. (2014). Are leaders born or made?

Kiara: I am inclined to say that leaders are made. The only thing that separates the chiefs from the Indians is their drive. Leaders are able to implement ideas, stand up for what they believe in and be the driving force behind change. I don't believe that is something people are simply born with. People can be born with certain characteristics that make them stand out more but these aren't things that cannot be taught. The way someone looks can be changed the way someone behaves can be changed as well. If someone really wanted to be a leader, they could learn how to be. There are a ton of programs out there for people wanting to be leaders. Many of these programs require certain things to be admitted. Some require a certain level of education, experience, etc. I felt if there were born leaders then these programs wouldn't be necessary because you 're either a leader or you're not. Some say "natural born leader", i feel that only pertains to ones attitude, which can be changed or sharpened.

It is said that leasers are about 1/3 born and 2/3 made. If you don't use the talent you were born with, you lose it.

being a leader can be really complex and can be different in many different organizations. One cannot expect someone to be born with this type of knowledge.

Great leaders are great at self development.

Riggio, R. (2009, March 18). Leaders: Born or Made?.

Chelsea: I think leaders are both born and made. Some people are natural born leaders and feel comfortable delegating and leading groups of people. Others develop into great leaders through coaching and direction, confidence building and classes. For any leader, born or made, there are ways to become a better leader. According to Erika Andersen, author of the article "Are Leaders Born Or Made" she states that the most important, most powerful way to become a better leader is to become self aware. This includes deep diving into your strengths and weaknesses and the impact you have on others. She also states that inviting feedback is a great way to develop into a stronger leader and that listening better is a foundation to success in any aspect of life (2012). It's important that any leader, even those that are born with the passion to lead, continuously strives to become a better leader.

While researching whether leaders are born or made, it's interesting because a lot of articles seem to lean towards leaders being made, not born. While I absolutely believe that great leaders can be made, I also do believe that there are natural born leaders out there.

Reference

Andersen, E. (2012). Are leaders born or made?

Amber: When I truly question whether leadership is born or made I tend to hover right over the dividing line. Leadership styles differ in different scenario's, but I believe that a leader is born with specific personality traits that make them a natural leader, but I also tend to believe that anything can be learned. A natural leader may hold good skills to communicate and influence, but a made leader can also learn communication skills and time management. I do believe that it takes a special someone to be a great leader which would include a mix of both natural traits and learned skills through experience and education.

Carrie: This is a tough question! My daughter is 12 years old and since she has been in school there has always been a teacher that says " Violet is a natural leader we just need to teach her how to finesse her approach" or something very similar. This statement means my daughter is naturally bossy which is a true statement because she is and we struggle daily in educating her on how to finesse her approach so she doesn't come across bossy. I believe leaders can be both born and made. Leaders that are born leaders may be natural leaders however their skill set may need to be developed and/or finessed over time. Made leaders may not seem like natural born leaders but develop these skills overtime, possibly due to mentoring and/or experience.

Sanela: Leaders are made not born! People can become leaders through the process of teaching, learning and observation. Leadership is a set of skills that can be learned by training, perception, practice and experience over time. Leadership learning is lifetime activity. In my previous job I had a great manager who was performing as a great leader and one thing that I have noticed about him is that he constantly was reading books about leadership and when he was promoted and moved from the branch to the other department we all felt the absence of great leadership that has downgraded to very poor leadership with the new manager.

Deanna: I believe that it is not one or the other. Leaders can be made. If someone has the drive, the dedication, and the people skills for success, they can do things such as taking classes, seminars, practicing public speaking to ensure that if and when they are placed in a position of leadership they will succeed. While others through no doing of their own are presented with a life that gives them advantages, and expatiations, and a plan already set in place. Sometimes just the name of a person allows for people to consider someone a leader, even if that individual has no leadership skills, but their is the occasion that some individuals are both born and made leaders.

I have seen many people throughout my life who I may have grown up with from childhood or early adulthood who were always outgoing and directive to others become successful leaders. I have also known people who were shy and stood in the shadows of others become successful leaders as they got older and found their footing or calling.

Many people simple grow into good or even great leaders.

Gayle:
I think some people are born with characteristics that make a good leader which may make it easier for them to become a leader and have it be more natural for them, but I also believe leaders can be made. If someone really wants to be a leader, they can work hard for it and put in the work to become a leader and be successful at it.
So, I think it can go either way. "Your best strategy, then, is to hire for energy, the ability to energize, and passion. Go full force in training and developing edge and execution" (Welch, 2016, Para. 4). Welch states that out of the 5 characteristics to be a good leader the two that can taught through training are edge and execution. So, he agrees that a leader can be born or made because if someone wants it bad enough, they can be trained and learn to do it.

Reference:
Welch, J.

Alicia:

Personally I believe that leaders are born with characteristics that make them who they are. Leaders are born with a natural drive to lead and genuine passion for leadership. I say this because I can relate. From a young age, even being the underdog in a lot of situations, I always had a naturally drive to lead my peers.

I also understand that the answer is not that simple. Although, I think it is important for leaders to posses certain personality characteristics, I also believe that depending on an individuals personal journey through life, they can mold and transform themselves into someone completely different over time. However, I believe that a passion for leadership is the most important component. It may take training and opportunity to bring that out of him.

I found an article that discusses this topic. It breaks down the definition of leadership and uses those definitions to define how leaders are either made or born. The conclusion that it comes to is that, they are both made and born. While leaders must posses natural ability to lead, they must also be developed along the way to become the best versions of themselves.

The article I referenced above can be found at:

https://jackwelch.strayer.edu/winning/born-leaders-made-leaders/

Lyric:
I feel that leaders are made rather than born. Although I understand that some characteristics are with us from birth, I think many of the ones that apply to leadership are learned. This is truly a question of nature vs. nurture, and I side heavily with nurture from personal experiences. My parents are both very opinionated and leaders in their fields. My mother leads quietly by example as my father is more vocal, and I think that their varying leadership styles have shaped me into being a mix of both. My leadership style has also been impacted by constantly being involved in team sports from youth into adulthood. That experience has taught me communication, compromise, and problem-solving.

I do think a person is born either introverted or extroverted, and this has a major impact on how you interact with others. However, I do not think it hinders a person's ability to be charismatic, passionate, or inspirational. It just changes the way people express those things like my mother and father leading in two very different ways. Therefore, it may be that leadership is "a set of innate traits, refined and perfected over time with education, training and experience" (Hyacinth, 2014).

Reference:
Hyacinth, B. (2014).
