A Day in the Life of Bob

Once upon a time, lived a man whose name was Bob. Bob was an average man who lived an average life in Chicago. He worked as a bed salesman at Walmart, and had a great girlfriend. Though it was nothing grandeur, he enjoyed life as it was, cherishing every moment as they passed.

All that changed when he once went too near to a dumpster. Something attracted to him the dumpster, it was some sort of animal, something wild and seemed unnatural. The sky was dark, so Bob couldn't see anything. Suddenly, the animal lunged at him, at ungodly speeds. Turns out, it was a radioactive rat, which bit Bob's ankles. Bob shrieked in pain, as the rat ran away. Then Bob decided to go home and sleep the night, as he didn't think the bite marks were severe.

While he was sleeping, he dreamt of a wonderful life where the rat bite gave him rat powers, and he had named himself "Ratman" in the dream. He woke up abruptly, after he fought some thugs in his dream, where one of them gave Bob a particularly hard punch. Bob thought he actually had gained superpowers, but then, a horrible realization dawned upon him. He had received no powers at all. The bite had only gave him an unending sensation of hunger and craving for cheese. Bob then lived the rest of his life with a chronic cheese addiction, one where he couldn't even receive therapy for.

The Truth of Serbia's Dancing Urban Legend

In the south Slavic country of Serbia, a notorious urban legend was spread far and wide on the internet. The legend speaks about a mysterious lady who dances at night, and those who had gazed upon her were chased by the lady, with a knife in hand. Many have searched for the truth behind this tale, with many others calling it a lie, or a mere campfire story to entertain readers in the internet. However, it isn't illogical to assume that any urban legend would have their roots in real-life incidents.

The notoriety of this story started in 2019, with a Tiktok video of a dancing lady in the middle of the street at midnight. This would start a trend of people discussing the "Serbian Dancing Lady" out of curiosity. An eyewitness would tell their story regarding an encounter with the mythical lady, saying that "As they noticed a figure dancing in the distance, the lady suddenly charged towards them, uttering profanities and proclaiming herself to be the "ambassador of death." " (The Economic Times, 2023). Though, blatantly trusting recounts from unreliable sources would have no credibility, sightings like these only fuel the imminent spread of the urban legend.

Origins of the story behind this urban legend could also be traced in Serbian myth and folklore, where a woman fell in love with a man from a different village, causing opposition from either side. The myth would end in the woman passing away and her spirit being cursed to roam the streets of Serbia, where she'd dance to a mournful tune (The Economic Times, 2023). This would imply that the Urban Legend has some roots also present in local myth and folklore.

Both roots, which not only come from alleged sightings, but also an origin in folklore, would be the main factors behind people's belief that the "Serbian Dancing Lady" would be true. People tend to believe myths as a way to understand the unknown aspects of their lives, where they would share stories to provide an explanation regarding the fears and anxiety that are caused by the unknown. Hence, leading to a society believing myths told within them, eventually leading to cultural events and activities. Overall, no true evidence has been found regarding the cases circulating regarding the Serbian Dancing Lady. Yet the lack of evidence regarding any story would only fuel the curiosity people feel, leading to more research.

SOURCE: https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/new-updates/the-creepy-serbian-dancing-lady-a-mysterious-myth-that-haunts-tiktok-users/articleshow/101270448.cms?from=mdr

This interesting poster, made by the World Wildlife Fund, asks an interesting and deep question about wildlife conservation.

The question, being the main hook within the poster, asks the viewer(s) to reflect upon the animals they pay attention to, with cuter animals, such as the panda receiving more public attention regarding conservation. Meanwhile, other species at risk, such as oceanic fish that face over-fishing due to a gigantic industry (like the tuna present in the poster) do not receive worldwide attention.

The question conveys the message well, with it asking the viewer to pay more attention regarding the species that are at risk of going extinct, even though they may not be a cute or notable as the panda (which also happens to be the WWF's mascot).
