Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects how a person interacts and communicates with others. People with ASD may have repetitive behaviors or strong interests in certain things. The symptoms can range from mild to severe.

ASD starts in early childhood, and signs may show up by age 1. Some kids develop normally at first but then show signs of ASD between 18 to 24 months.

Don't follow your gaze or look at things you’re pointing to.

Doesn’t respond to their name.

Seems uninterested in taking-turn games like peek-a-boo.

Doesn’t seek you out to share something they’ve discovered.

Look away rather than looking you in the eye.

Use your hand as a tool to pick up things they want.

Prefers to play by themselves (continuing beyond age 2).

Having a sibling with ASD

Having certain genetic or chromosomal conditions, such as fragile X syndrome or tuberous sclerosis

Experiencing complications at birth

Being born to older parents

If your child is 3 years old or older

If your child is 3 years old or older, contact your local public school system.

Even if your child is not yet old enough for kindergarten or enrolled in a public school, call your local elementary school or board of education and ask to speak with someone who can help you have your child evaluated.
