In middle school and high school I often struggled to wrap my mind around abstract math concepts. More than a few times I handed in homework stained with invisible teardrops. In the 10th grade, however, I had a teacher who applauded us for our mistakes and who taught us to focus on the process rather than the outcome. He made space for me to find patience and awe in understanding the "how" of math. The success I found that year launched my math trajectory into advanced classes and subsequently college level calculus. While I still encountered difficulties and obstacles in college (with some marks in math at the lower end of the grade scale), my curiosity for how math can be broken down and simplified to solve complex problems has never left and it is one of the reasons why I love learning about and teaching math.

I wasn't always strong in math. I remember failing math in the 4th grade. That summer, with some textbooks at home and a lot of encouragement from my parents, I learned how to teach myself math. I really began to enjoy math in middle school. My teacher was very organized and I loved the systematic, logical nature of the subject. It still didn't just come easily to me. I had to work at it. But I definitely took pride in being able to tackle really difficult problems. I would say there was a bit of pride in being able to figure something out that others seemed to really struggle with. In college I got humbled a bit. In my math journey up until that point I had been a bit of an individual worker. College math required more collaboration. This I struggled with; particularly with asking for help from teachers as well as fellow students. It is an area I'm still seeking to grow in.

“I don’t want to be a mathematician or a math teacher, so no, thanks.”

These were my words to the head of a special math program I was invited to at my college. Late in high school, I struggled to teach myself the math in the textbook when I couldn’t make sense of my class notes to figure out my homework. Even though I was really good at taking math tests like the SAT (I had a GREAT tutor) and the AP Calc Exam, I thought that math was a soulless subject, and I wasn’t very interested in pursuing it further.

Growing up, my dad was always VERY quick at mental math calculations, and I would feel so much math anxiety when trying to work out calculations in my head in conversation with him, even when I could do it easily on paper with no problem. I eventually rediscovered it when I started tutoring, and I fell in love with the problem-solving and puzzle-like nature of math once I saw how awesome, useful, and beautiful math can be.

I didn't really like math until 7th grade algebra, when I had a teacher who really encouraged me -- even though I didn't speak much in class, she saw the learning I demonstrated on homework and tests. Until then, I didn't think I could be "good at math." She invited me to join the math team. When I went to the first meeting, I felt a little out of my element because I had no idea how to solve a lot of the problems, but I was excited about the puzzle-like questions. During group competitions, I noticed that each person had different strengths, and different types of problems they were good at. I ended up majoring in physics in college, so we had to take a lot of math classes. It was interesting to see how many different types of math there are, because high school math can be so focused on the algebra-through-calculus path. Some types of math come more easily to me. When it doesn't come easily, it can be super frustrating because I feel like I am banging my head against a wall. As I've gotten older, I am better at being patient with myself when I am learning something new; it takes time to form those new connections in your brain! While my job now does not directly relate to math, I think that math is a way of seeing and a way of thinking about the world. I use what I learned in statistics when I analyze data from student surveys -- the math tells me what's important and what's just noise. I love to sew quilts and clothing, and mathematical concepts from trigonometry and geometry often come up. I love going to museums to see art inspired by or related to mathematical concepts: mosaics, tiling, anything "infinite", studies of lines and planes, ... It feels really empowering to not be scared of math and to be able to see the ways it gets used all around us!

I used to feel discouraged in math because I felt like I wasn’t good at it. I was constantly failing my math classes in Elementary school. The bad grades and my lack of motivation made me think this way. However, I didn’t always think/feel this way. Everything changed in 7th grade. We got our first test. I tried very hard because I knew I had more to offer. I was tired of failing. It was time to turn things around. Grades were coming back. I still had the thought in my head that I probably failed. However when I got that test, I got a 19.5/20. The .5 was because I didn’t name one of the units. Math has been great for me ever since. Even through the struggles and failed tests. All because I tried and believed in myself. That’s how I cope with math challenges or any challenge.

I felt successful when my friend and I were studying through facetime for a big math test the following day. We were both nervous but that hard work paid off. We both got a 36/40 and I will never forget the huge smile on my math teacher’s face.

I don’t wish to continue math past college but I would like to use my math skills to help my younger cousins, or children if I ever have them.

Math has always been hard, it's a very tedious subject with a lot of formulas and there is always only one answer.

A time where I have felt confident in my math ability is during 8th grade when I would start to get better grades on my quizzes and homeworks. This really helped me not lose hope and made me feel better about my math ability. Additionally, a time where I felt hopeless was 6th grade because the online learning was hard in math because it wasn't in person and I couldn't get the help I needed. But there have been several times that I have felt discouraged in math and haven't felt my best. Some things that I do to help with these problems are not feeling discouraged, asking questions and going to office hours. Another thing that I do is use the resources that are available and provided for my benefit.

I have done math outside of school, I have had tutors and gotten help from specialists.

I don't really envision myself doing complex math like trigonometry and geometry, but things like percentages, statistics, and basic math will probably be used in my daily life moving forward.

In math I always struggled with asking questions with worry I would slow down the class or be judged for my understanding of the lesson. I was behind sometimes and only got help when I needed to get an assignment or test in and then the teacher would see how much I understood and the errors in my work. It didn't help that I didn't feel safe in the environment I was in until the end of the year. I practiced participating more during class and getting rid of my nerves so I could become more confident with asking for help. I learned everyone has their moments and might desire a helping hand but don't let yourself get behind in school because of your silence, you have a voice to use it.

My math story started at my elementary school. I was always interested in math, but t was hard to pay attention, Which we found out later was due to my ADHD. I still liked math more than any other class, and I feel like the having a good teacher can make or break a math class. So when I went to a different school, math got harder for me. This was a result of having long term subs for a while. this led to me losing interest in one of my most favorite subjects. This was the reason why I switched to Brooklyn Friends. Last year, I had some trouble adjusting to the level of math being taught. But I learned how to organize time to become a better student in math. I see a lot of math in my future due to the fact that I want to go to Cornell. And even after that, I want to work in Buisness or Investment Banking.

I like math, however, sometimes the rules of math are hard for me to learn or keep up with. It is hard to keep the same amount of enthusiasm about math when I do not understand what is being taught. I used to like math way more because I was able to understand the topics a lot more. I feel capable when I understand the math from the beginning of the unit, but when we get further in the unit I tend to not feel as capable because I would have so much to catch up on. I try to overcome these challenges by listening intently at the beginning of the unit and putting in the work to make sure I truly understand the topic and the rules that apply. I should make sure I am comfortable with the math before it gets more complicated. Math fits into almost every career, major, or activity. When I am older I would like to major in things that include math, although my opinion on what I want to do may change with time. Currently, I am thinking about majoring in business or psychology. If I want to become a therapist, I would have to do doctor-level training, similar to med school. That requires a lot of math. It also requires math on a human understanding level. For example, if you have a client who is going through a lot, you would have to find out what is bothering them and how you can help them. That is how problem-solving fits into a therapist's life. Everyone does math in their daily lives, even if they do not notice it. Cooking involves math, setting the table for dinner involves math, and even things as simple as watching TV shows involve math.

I've never really liked math, I've always felt like I didn't really understand it. I have a lot of trouble with it and I also find it hard sometimes to focus in class, which makes it harder for me to learn things. Times when I feel particularly successful are whenever I feel like I really understand what's going on in class, like maybe it was explained really well, or I was just paying attention and taking notes. Another time I always feel really successful is whenever I do good on tests. I feel really frustrated whenever we're learning something and I just can't seem to grasp just how to do it. Sometimes what we're learning is really complicated and I really don't understand it, so I just feel like giving up and like I shouldn't even try. Usually how I overcome challenges in Math are I'll ask my teacher and usually they do a good job with helping me understand it. Other times, I'll ask my friends if they understand it, if they can try and help me, but a lot of the times they feel the same way I do. If I'm at home, sometimes I'll ask my dad to help me with homework if I really don't get it, and a lot of times after, I feel like I get it a lot better. In the future I'll do math in collage and hopefully I'll feel better about it by then. And also I'll use math when I'm older calculating expenses and stuff like that.

Math has always sort of been a burden in my studies, in my head i see it as this thing that i have to spend so much time to master one assignment. And i see it as boring and frankly a waste of my time, the reason for this is because i seem to forget the topic a couple months later. I started my math journey in Los Angeles where i was born. But its not all bad i do like group projects surrounding math and real life situations. This is where i find the most confidence in group work, i feel it is a great place to present myself as a leader. A big help with math would probably be my brother he is one of the reasons i don't feel extremely behind in math. If i have a test coming up i make sure to go to him for tricks and tips about different problems. I don't see myself pursuing math as a career but i do really want to get better at it in general so i never feel behind in class thats probably my biggest fear. I plan to spend extra time mastering assignments and problems so i feel ahead.

My feelings toward math change every year, it all depends on what topics we are covering that year. When I was younger I enjoyed math and solving problems but as I get older I don't love it as much. Math has become this thing that feels stressful because there are so many rules and things I have to keep track of. I try and go into each year with an open mind but that become difficult once the work actually starts. I feel as if im good at taking a stab at something even if im not absolutely sure if thats how im supposed to be going about the problem. Sometimes I struggle with remembering rules about the steps I have to take to get to an answer. I try and stay persistante and try different ways at taking notes and studying what I need to remember. I have grown in that area and have found a way that has worked for me since like the middle of 8th grade year. Ive done math when I go out for dinner and my parent are trying to figure out the tip. Sometimes ill be in the store with my mom and she needs help with trying to estimate a total so ill do that for her. I want to be a lawyer and i often might have to look at statistic and math will help me with that.

Math is not my favorite subject. I have never been really excited to go to math class especially when I know that the classes are going to start getting harder. I have never been very strong at math like my other peers. I particularly did not like when I would have to do math presentations in front of the class.

I have felt successful in math when I would get good grades. I also felt capable when I felt that I understood the topic and felt comfortable with it. That would be when I wasn't stressed out about it.

When I didn't understand some of the math shown in class, I would ask my teacher and/or go to office hours either during lunch or after school. I would practice the topic on my own by watching Khan Academy or doing extra IXL problems.

I have obviously had math homework to do out of the class like mostly everyone. I also have a jewelry business and I give away 25% of my profits to a social justice cause, so I will be using math to figure out how much i would donate. I don't believe I want to take math as a professional route later in life. I have other gifts that I would like to pursue. I would use my math skills if I have to help younger cousins and my sister with their math homework.

I have never felt like I have liked math before. Growing up it has always been the one class where I had no interest in. Throughout lower school, the teachers always split us up by our 'math learning style' but I always knew that they split the groups up into who was stronger at math, and the kids who struggled with it. Year after year, I was always put into the group who struggled more at math than others. So right from the get-go, it was super defeating knowing that your teachers didn't see you as smarter in math. That made me not want to put in any more effort because I thought I could never move up. Years later, when I had to have the conversation with my family about wheather I wanted to do full IB, I decided to take the lower math class because I felt like I didn't have enough faith in myself to be put in the SL math class. Unfortunately that meant I was no longer qualified for the IB diploma, even though I am taking 3 HL classes. Now, being in senior year, I regret not pushing myself in math. I have always taken the easy way out because I keep looking back to my 2nd grade self who was put with the struggling math group. Now being in my final year, I want to push myself now, simply because I will have no other time in my high school education to do so.

A lot more time and dedication went into math which I did not have the patience for nor the want to do. I overcame these challenges by simply studying more and putting more time into math, but eventually at the end of the year I was just tired out honestly, as I was moving into high school and had to start taking harder courses. I use math in the real world practically everyday, whether thats in calculating how much food will be, venmoing my friends if were splitting a bill, calculating taxes on my job or reselling of clothes, its still in my everyday life. It probably will stick with me for the rest of my life as I plan to probably major in business, but if not I will still see it appear when I'm doing my taxes or if I am making a sale online or simply just calculating tax on a bill for dinner.

I definitely struggled a lot with math when I was younger. I never took to it and it didn't come naturally to me. I think I spent a lot of time being frustrated without actually putting in the work to understand what I was doing. In middle school, my math grades were pretty low and I felt frustrated by the curriculum. It seemed like we were spending a lot of time doing things that weren't actually going to be relevant after the semester was over. I think things really started to change in High School. I've become a lot more disciplined as time has gone on and this has definitely shown itself in my math performance. I began to take time out of class to go to office hours and I wasn't afraid to ask questions if it meant that I would do better in class. By the time I was a junior, the grades that I was getting in math were higher than they had ever been before. Overall, I think that I enjoy math a lot more now than I did when I was younger and the process of improving my skill in math has made me a better student overall.

Another I was successful in math was in seventh grade because of the teacher that I had he made learning very easy, and he was a fan of basketball, so he broke it down to me in word problems that had to do with basketball. One challenge that I faced in math was covid year because we were online so the learning was much harder for many reasons. I think the main reason was because of all of the distractions that were in front of me. I didn't really overcome math in covid year I just kept doing the work, and when we eventually went back to school, it was much easier. I don't envision myself doing math outside of school.

Math has always been a subject that I have disliked. The earliest math classes I could remember were enjoyable, and even in the past few years I've found it enjoyable only when I fully understand the concept. I have an auditory processing disorder and this makes it harder to process things, especially within a class like math, which requires great memory and problem-solving. That has been something I have always had trouble with. Many of my teachers in the past taught at a rapid pace as well which made it even harder for me to grasp the information. Visiting teachers and receiving extra help when needed was always an amazing opportunity for me to understand the concepts again and thrive in the class. I have no clue what the future holds, and I am still not a huge fan of math but in all honesty, I hope that I end up liking it.

I have had pretty good teachers for the past few years, though before that lots of times my teachers would make me feel like my work was horrible, even if it wasn't. I could see myself doing math in a career in the future, I at one point was thinking about maybe becoming some sort of architect or engineer, which would definitely use a lot of math.

To be honest my perspective towards math is very different. I am proud of my abilities in math until Im not. It all depends on what we are learning in math and how we are learning it. For example last years math class started off really strong. I participated as much as possible, and get good grades on all my work. That was until we reached a certain unit about graphing and everything just threw me off. I was suddenly not sure of my math skills and my ability to solve problems. Everything just became so confusing and I just didn't know what to do. This problem did take a little while to fix but what mainly helped was going to office hours and doing extra problems. I only ever do math outside of school when Im cooking or doing practice problems for fun. In the future I want to be a Contract Negotiator, which may involve things like percentages and whatnot. I don't really care for math but I do want to get a stronger grasp on it.

I felt really successful in math class in 6th grade when we did geometry and I felt really frustrated in 7th grade when we covered fractions. I was able to cope with this by going to office hours until I had a better understanding of the subject. The only time I have done math outside of the math classroom was when I was studying for the SHSAT. I envision myself using math in my future as in school and possibly in a job.

I enjoy math for the most part. I have felt this way for a while. I struggled when I had to prepare for the private middle school acceptance test, I studied every night after ballet. During covid it was hard to learn since I was staying in a separate state and we only had one hour of school a day, math was independent, so I couldn't ask for help. Then after being in person full time I found math was easier. I feel successful when I understand the lesson and homework, or when I get a good grade on a test. I do feel in the middle of a unit by trying to keep all of the past information I learned in my brain while making space for new things or going back to school because I forgot a lot. I did math books over the summer for the first few years of elementary school. I envision myself doing math for I guess calculating the appropriate amount to tip, and doing taxes, i'm not really sure.

I have always struggled with math in many ways. If i didn't grasp the concept, or if i spaced out and miss an important lesson, then I would kind of give up on the subject we're learning. I have always had trouble with paying attention and asking for help on things I missed, so completing assignments is difficult. asking for help from the teacher and writing notes have helped me a bit, but I still struggle with the knowledge of where I am actually struggling with the math or just getting intimidated by the work and giving up . When i properly grasp the concept I tend to have some fun with math, though I am not the best at recognising when I would benefit from taking the challenging option.

Math has always been one of my favorite subjects in school. I enjoyed practicing my problem solving skills and learning new topics. Although I enjoyed math, I lost some of my passion for math in 6th grade as I felt disconnected from it because of quarantine and online school. I had less opportunities to learn new math forms/skills and I felt that I was not improving. I felt this way until in-person school began in 7th grade. My math teacher made the lessons engaging and I found myself truly enjoying math again like I did before covid. During this period of time, I found myself continuously growing and challenging myself in math and I grew more confident in my math abilities. Additionally, my revived confidence in math inspired me to practice at home and learn to enjoy it even more. In the future, I hope to be able to further my confidence in new math topics and enjoy the process of making mistakes and growing from it.

Since learning how to talk, learning Math came easy for me, from Kindergarten to around 5th Grade math was coming instinctively to me. Until 6th Grade where the challenge increased significantly, and with no help from Covid - 19 seeing teachers and asking questions in person was non-existent. That began the downward cycle of my mathematical career. Returning back to school in 7th grade helped me a lot to rekindle my understanding for math, but it was a slow resurface from the past year. 8th grade is where I really picked up. Thanks to an amazing teacher I was able to almost completely bounce back from my slump 2 years ago, and with High School applications I had ample motivation to catch up.

Mathematics was a subject that was never excruciating for me. It came simple; a proper introduction of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, was a breeze for me in the 2nd Grade. I always felt as if Math was a subject that was somewhat easy; I always did well on an assignment, and if I didn't, I would look over my mistakes with perspicacity. A time where I felt particularly successfully capable in Math class was when I was put in Advanced Placement, after completing a Mathematics assignment, in the 4th Grade. This gave me a significant boost in confidence, however, a time where I felt frustrated and hopeless would be when I did not really understand what was being taught to me. This would happen every once in a while between grades; 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. Coping with challenges in Math, came from help from my teachers, or students in my class. Doing Math outside of the classroom started in obviously purchasing items, and calculating tax. As a result, I envision myself using Math in my career, being a Computer Science and Engineer Major.

Recently I’ve been struggling with math more and more. When I was younger I liked math a lot and it had always been my favorite subject. In elementary school it was always so easy for me to understand and it was a class I looked forward to. When 7th grade started I started to struggle with math more. I never liked to raise my hand to ask for help because it always felt like the entire class understood but me. So I would have to go home and call my older siblings to help me with my homework or study for a test. Ever since COVID I’ve become a slow learner and it took time for me to get my work done. My older siblings gave me strategies for when I was stuck and didn’t understand a question. I also started to ask my teachers and peers more questions so I can become a better learner. Being afraid to ask questions held me back and didn’t allow me to be great.

I both like and dislike math. I have hated the subject for most of my life because I normally don't do very well. I don't think that this is an issue with my math skills but more my test taking abilities. Math is always a stressful subject because my understanding in math compared to my other classes is low. When taking tests I normally struggle even more. I overcome these challenges by working with a tutor and studying a lot. I also cope with my stress by focusing on finishing the test in front of me. In the future I want to study both social psychology and environmental science so math is likely to be very prevalent in my studies. So working at my own pace is a skill I need to work on.

Math has always been a subject that I have known to take more serious than other classes. Because of the real world practicality of math, most of the material is essential in order to work in finance and business. A time I felt successful in math was when I got an A+ on a test. This was a proud and comforting moment because I knew I had the material down. I coped with my challenges throughout math by trying to understand the subject first and try to complete the easy problems before moving and challenging yourself. I think I do math everyday outside of class. Whether it is telling the time, or knowing when to be on time. Everything is math. I envision myself doing finance-business when i'm older which involves a lot of math.

In my last school I really struggled with math. This made me not like math as much as I do now. The only reason im good at math now is because of my teacher. He made me feel more comfortable in class which helped me actually want to do math and like the subject. Obviously I wasn't bad at math always in kindergarten I was definitely like an A+ student. It just as I got older the more complicated and since I was a jokester when I was younger it made me fall behind. Now I feel way more successful in math when I complete all my work before others and actually can participate in math conversation. Theres only a handful of times where I might be confused so I usually ask Teddy my teacher to help me. Sometimes I felt hopeless when I was sick the day before and had no clue what we were doing and I didn't want to ask what to do because I thought the teacher would get mad that I wasn't listening. Me personally I don’t see myself doing math in the future and the only way would be helping my kids out in school. If I do get a job that uses math then I would do that.

I never really liked math as it has always been difficult for me and I don't think I've ever fully understood it. It feels like what you learn when you're younger is replaced as you grow up and that when you begin learning a new type of math, and are taught a new set of rules, shortly after you begin to understand them they are changed. This makes the subject difficult for me to keep track of. I also tend to have a hard time concentrating on studying math since I find it stressful and tend to lose interest quickly. Math also seems to be a bit stressful because of the fact that when a part of an equation is simple to understand and can be done easily and quickly by using methods you already know, that way is often rejected as teachers often prefer a new and extensive method that I tend to find unnecessary.

Math has always been pretty easy for me, but it was hard during the transition from middle to high school. I learned math at Pearl Street and was very bad at multiplication sheets. It just started to gradually get harder and harder throughout the years. I felt particularly successful whenever im able to understand anything in math really with no confusion and breeze through the work. I felt frustrated a lot especially in middle school cause covid caused me to not really pay attention in class at all so the next years I didn't understand stuff we were already supposed to know from past years. I overcame challenges by meeting with teachers or rereading past notes or things I have done. I cope by trying to compare the work to past work I've done. I have done math when trying to calculate prices in real life or the distance, height, width and measurements of other things. I envision myself doing math for bills and taxes probably. I could probably do it for budgeting as well.

I feel fine about math. I've always felt confident. I have always not really cared for it but have been pushed to do it because I come from a family of math people. I feel better about math when I'm understanding the topic and not feeling like I'm falling behind. I always feel more successful or capable when my work pays off. For example, if I have been working on something for a while, and then it clicks and I understand everything I will feel like I have succeeded in something. I feel frustrated and annoyed when I feel like everyone understands something and I'm the only one who doesn't like my work isn't taking me anywhere. I do math outside of the math classroom every day like when I am getting food or looking at my schedule trying to figure out when a class ends. I cope by telling myself I am worth more than my grade in high school math and also by putting things in perspective. In the future, I can see myself doing math when I have to do taxes, figure out student loans when I want to buy a home and need to figure out a mortgage and things, and also when I have kids because you have to think about the financial responsibilities of having a child.

I wasn't necessarily bottom of my math class at elementary school but I was not iat a level that was best for me. After the ISEE tests that I struggled with, I began to get more confidence from both my new school BUGS and my new tutor. The BUGS math curriculum was going at a more than comfortable pace giving me the opportunity to help others in class. Doing this boosted my confidence and made me more comfortable doing math. Finally, my tutor also instilled confidence in me by making me not fear math and instead want to understand it.

I tend to like most branches of math but sometimes I get in my own head and mess up. Generally however, math has always been a fun experience for me as I am a pretty fast learner. In the third and fourth grade my school held a math competition with another school, called Mathletes. During the competition I led my team and we didn’t get a single question wrong. I remember last year in Mr. Lane’s math class I was struggling with because I didn't really understand the system at first when my bestest buddy G. Thomas Milien helped me out by explaining it in a simple way that I could understand. It really opened my eyes to math and made me realize that sometimes its not about the material, but instead your own understanding of it. I’ve done math by calculating how much I can spend on going to lunch and still having enough money to buy sneakers, or more complex situations like calculating how much money i will gain in 5 years from interest by investing and putting my money in the bank. In the future I want to be an architect so that will definitely involve quite a few calculations, whether it's how much space I have, to include a 60in flat screen tv, or how much time it’ll take to complete a project.

Math is great. Obviously, it’s caused trouble for a lot of people around me, including myself at times, but I’ve always felt this way. It never particularly caused me any issues. In 8th grade, I felt really special. I was ahead of the class and the teacher acknowledged that by letting me study ahead. However, this would also be my downfall. The next year, 9th grade, I skipped ahead to 10th-grade math. It went terribly for me and I haven’t gotten grades worse since, getting a 4/40 on my first test (it was supposed to be a review to test though). Especially since it was during COVID and I hadn’t experienced difficulty with math this extreme before, it was all happening so quickly that it was hard to even attempt to overcome it. I first needed to learn to accept it and this was a very developmental point in my academic career. The way I overcame it was by doing more independent work, which allowed me to finish with one of the highest grades in the class. Outside of the classroom, I’ve used math to keep track of my health; stuff like my food intake and such. I would hope to use math as a way of benefiting my and others' lives through health and business.

I've always had difficulties with math. To be honest, I've never really fully understood it. But who has? Math is infinite. However, I have always had an interest in mathematics. Maybe because one of my favorite interests, engineering, heavily involves math?

Or because I believe math is the building block of human calculation and decision making. Recently I feel like I've been getting better at understanding math. This is because I've been putting more effort into math by studying and practicing more. After working harder and practicing more I started to enjoy math more. Whenever im faced with a challenge my teachers are very supportive and give me the help I need to overcome those challenges. It is also very important to keep a growth mindset and continue to learn and grow.

But now that it's gotten harder, it's not fun anymore and it takes me some time to understand. And i also think that im not that good at math because of my teacher of 7th grade, she was never a good teacher, she only taught for like 3 mins and went over one question and then would sit down and go on her phone. Then i had her again for ther math regents class and again she didn't teach good. Then i had another math teacher at a program i was in and he was not a good teacher he would always move way to fast and wouldn't explain well. The only time i understood and felt succeful was when we were working with the quartic formula. I felt hopeless many of times in their class,i overcame some of this challenges by going to office hours and getting help from my friends. I hope that in the future i'll be able to understand math better because i need it for becoming a doctor.

Growing up I hated math. Never understood it never liked it never wanted to learn it. I would be so frustrated if I got anything wrong. But in seventh grade I had an amazing math teacher. She showed me the way, explained it so I can understand it and taught in such a kind and caring way. By the end of the year my grade in that class was a 97. She proved to myself that I can be good at math and succeed in the subject. In that year I realized that the biggest part of my learning, and deciding factor if I was gonna be successful or not, was the teacher. In that class I got a 92 and above in almost all of my tests. Which boosted my confidence and gave me so much pride in my own self. Being able to say that I could do the hard problems I can solve the questions, Im smart. So I after her I had a new found belief in my own craft and my own abilities in work. I take that with me now in every math class I enter every year. I believe that if the teachers method is compatible with how I learn and who I am as a person. I can be vey successful in math.

To be completely transparent I love math and I haven't always felt that way though towards math. Learning math was pretty difficult for me in middle school because I didn't understand the information being given and I started to think I couldn't do math do to the lack of ability to understand and comprehend the math( Algebra and Geometry) I was doing in class. For a couple months I started to practice and also I got a tutor that helped me figure out everything that was going on in my class and helped me improve my math skills. Once I got the hang of what I was doing I started to participate more and comprehend what the teacher was doing. After a while I started to see math everywhere in the store, while playing video games, while listening to music and so many other outside things. I really envision myself most likely being an architect because I really like to do art or also being a video game creator because it involves coding. I really think math this year will be a great experience and I hope it really works out!!.

Ever since I started math classes I didnt like it. In the younger grades like lower school I didn't struggle that much, and I think it was because of my mind set. As I got older and the work got harder I started to put a pressure on myself, that I had to be like everyone else.I thought that I was the only one struggling and know one really knew how I thought ,and I was alone. When covid hit in 5th grade it was really hard for me and peers to focus on school work because we were constantly moving. However, I do remember 6th grade math in particular, something about it felt safe maybe it was because there were less people in the class and the teacher was online, but my classmates and I actually enjoyed math. Some of us would take notes and work on homework together and we made it like our own little math reading group. But obviously it couldn't stay like that. Going into 7th grade I was really scared for math, we had a pretty quick adjustment back into classrooms and I wasn't sure how my teacher would be. The work was challenging and hard yes, but something about the teacher made it so much better. She understood me and knew how to help by explaining problems and getting us to ask questions something I tend to forget to do. I have challenges with things like tests and that math anxiety tends to hit me and I want to escape, I never want to do math again. I still haven't fully overcame this but I think one thing that could help is mindset. I have to start trusting in myself because I know I have a much higher chance of getting it right then. I think I stress myself for no reason and that's what makes me fall.Outside of the classroom I love to bake, it hit me only a couple weeks ago when I was struggling to figure out how to split the teaspoon amount/ double the recipy, and I need math. This summer I went out to dinner with and friend and we had to calculate the tip, and I need math. There is so much more math in your life than you tend to think. I think that certain things will always be hard but there is also so many different ways you can explore and expand your math skills and you never know when your math story will change. In the future I'd love to do things like marketing or event planning, and I know math will show up at one point. If I start by changing my mindset now maybe it will change. But maybe it will change in the future and that's okay.

I have always struggled with math, and therefore, I have always felt nervous about taking on new topics in class. I believe that math is not my strongest subject because it requires conceptual learning. To elaborate, I struggle with learning math concepts and applying the skills I learned to varying questions that relate to those concepts. In addition to struggling with math, I often feel frustrated with myself whenever I cannot succeed on my exams. I feel particularly frustrated when I do well on my homework assignments and feel confident, but then feel my confidence being destroyed after I do not do as well on a test or a quiz. However, I do attempt to overcome challenges in math by going back to the questions I struggle with and reflecting on how I can improve. I restart certain problems, and I can learn to understand concepts better. This method of reflection has proven to be helpful, as there have been some times when I succeeded in math. For example, last year, I was given the opportunity to do a test correction in the form of a math presentation. I was given the choice of picking a question that I got wrong and re-doing it by showing my steps on a Google slideshow. On the day that the test corrections were due, I presented my work, and to my surprise, I was very successful and was able to gain some points back. This experience felt rewarding and satisfying because it made me believe that, with time and practice, I could be good at math. Interestingly, I have done math outside of the classroom whenever I calculate percentages during clothing sales or whenever I have to pay a check at a restaurant. I envision that I will continue to do math in the future by calculating how to spend and save my money efficiently when I get a job. Therefore, I aim to continue improving as a math student because this subject will be relevant to my future. I will aim to take on challenges in this class and hone my skills as a math student.

Math has always been a difficult subject for me. Throughout middle school and up to junior year I've always disliked the class. However, depending on the teacher I've actually had some enjoyable experiences learning math. Whenever my teacher taught in a way I could understand, I would find myself understanding a lot more and weirdly enough, having fun solving problems. Tests have always been a struggle point for me as well. Some I do really well on and some I do poorly. It all depends on my understanding and knowledge of the unit. Believe it or not I would never get too bummed about it and would always keep a positive attitude to move on if my grade wasn't what I was hoping for. In conclusion, I have and never will use advanced math in my day to day life. In my mind it's completely pointless to me and my future but it matters for getting into college. So I'll still try my best towards the end of high school and I'm looking forward to never using it again.

I was never amazing at math, though I wasn't horrible. I would follow along in class and ask my friends for help when they understood the subject. I could do the work but I wouldn't understand any of the equations to any deeper level. I didn't make connections to other math I'd learned, it was all very surface level. However, whenever there's a subject that I really do understand I love it. I get really excited whenever I actually like the math I'm learning.

Well, until it got difficult and I wasn't aloud to draw as much anymore. I still enjoy math, but the difficulty can be un-motivating at times. This as translated heavily to math as in the past, if I have a good understanding of the topic we're learning it can be one of my favorite classes. If I'm struggling a lot I can really dread math. Sophomore year I felt very successful because for a long time I was able to maintain an A+ in the class finishing with an A. I think it was because I found success early on and kept pushing myself to keep getting better at math. This is opposite to freshman year were I consistently felt myself giving up and failing a lot. I had a super fixed mindset and didn't have the motivation to learn. I do use math outside of school when dealing with measurements outside of school. In the future, I want to be able to start my own business which will definitely be needed for a lot of math to deal with finance.

In Middle and Lower School, I thought I was pretty good at Math. Mostly because I was good at memorizing numbers and formulas when I needed to. However, by the time COVID hit, 7th Grade math got really hard for me. I always felt like I was falling behind, or like I wasn't where I was supposed to be compared to everyone else in the grade. When freshman year started, I was struggling to keep up in class. My parents noticed and started getting me a tutor, but he wasn't really helping that much. When I got to 10th Grade, I started asking for help more and going to office hours when I had time. Eventually, I felt comfortable enough in my math.

In middle school, I was always excited to go to math because I never felt like I had any challenges when it came to learning. In high school, the confidence slowly died down, but I have persisted in trying to be okay with math. After each summer, I always come to school as if I have forgotten everything, and slowly it all comes back to me. It's frustrating in the beginning but it is just part of the back-to-school routine.

I feel pretty okay about math and I have felt this way throughout middle and high school. I think having a good teacher is important because it's difficult to have a good learning experience with a bad teacher. I think something that I have had to overcome before and will probably have to work on this year is getting discouraged over a single quiz or test. I usually cope with this by studying harder for the next time. I think I mostly start feeling hopeless when a topic is confusing at the beginning of learning about it because this just brings down my excitement for that specific concept. I could see myself doing math in the future when it comes to taxes or the field of work I end up in.

i feel like math has always been something ive found beautiful, i love it for the same reasons i love science which is the objectivity of it. zoning out into math problems and puzzles seems so nicely distant from how complicated real life is in comparison. growing up, like many others, i was encouraged and told that i was advanced at math and that gave me a sort of higher ground to my other friends who weren't as much. but then i moved to the city and went to a school with really gifted and talented kids who devoted their lives to coding and doing math and logic problems for fun because thats just the way their minds worked. it broke my superiority but grew my devotion and curiosity. i began to distance myself from this idea that i was naturally blessed with a talent that nobody else had and adopted the belief that i am no better than anybody else (far from it) and yet i still will try my very hardest to be the best i can be according to my own self. i cant deny challenging myself and so joining a higher class when presented the opportunity was something i couldn't allow myself not to do. some times i can feel very behind and hopeless in relation to everybody else in terms of test taking, memorization, and formulas, but that's not what i love about math, i love the exploration and honing of it all. i see math in nature all of the time and i see it in how i choose to pay my employees and when converting recipes.

In elementary school and middle school I enjoyed math. I enjoyed it because I understood what was going on in class, I got good grades on all of my assignments, and I felt that it came naturally for me . In ninth grade, I placed in a tenth grade math class and this is when my love for math shifted. Often, I was confused and I never knew what was going on in class. Also, trying to learn something that I wasn't prepared for during Covid set me back because I didn't go to office hours over zoom or ask for help. However, I changed my approach in the second semester and I decided that I could try much harder to understand what was going on. Then, in tenth grade I preformed well in the class and started to enjoy math again. So, I decided to take HL Math, and after each test I regretted it. But, again, like in freshman year, I decided to take action and ask my teacher for help when I needed it and I feel that it showed that I tried harder to understand what was going on in class. Every day I do math outside of the classroom, when I'm shopping, and many more activities. I'm not sure how I envision myself doing math in the future but, I know I will be.

For most of my life, I always detested math. I never saw a use for it outside of the classroom and even when my mom would say, "Math is everywhere!", I always ignored her like the smug little middle schooler I was.

In 6th grade, amidst our unit on pre-algebra, I remember the intense loathing for the subject that obstructed any actual productivity in the class; as a result, on tests and quizzes, I consistently earned Bs.

Only in 7th grade, when I began to realize the importance of grades, did I step up my act. I altered my mindset in such a way that allowed me to learn productively and I started to see the connections to the real world; my grades also reflected this change -- straight As.

Ever since, even though I do not intend to pursue a field in math, I still enjoy studying it and observing how it plays a role in my life.

I would say that I feel fairly confident about math now but I do remember a time that I was not as confident. More recently, I find that I put a lot of effort into my learning and this currently helps with my understanding and even enjoyment of math class. However, earlier on in my math career I did not understand math as well and, if I did not reach out for help, I fell behind. Through middle school, I did learn to reach out to the teacher and I believe that learning to do this set me up for success in high school; it was certainly a turning point in my learning of math. I don't remember a time that I have done math outside the classroom but I know I definitely have done it in the past. Because I now feel much more capable in math, I definitely see myself doing math in the future. Whether or not it is simple day-to-day things math will still be helpful. Especially throughout my time in college. The majors I am most interested in all involve math (Science or Economics) so math will be necessary in my future.
