My experience with Marist Liberty Partnerships Program

Marist Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP), is a great program that gives back to the local community and encourages academic success for middle and high schoolers in the Poughkeepsie area. I found LPP to be very beneficial to me as an education major because I gained experience working with students in a unique after-school setting. I have learned a great deal about being a teacher from this experience outside the classroom. The role of a teacher goes further than academics because students are at a stage where having another adult in their lives who cares about them can make a big impact. In classes, I have learned, and continue to learn, about the important aspects of my future career, but LPP gave me experiences that I couldn’t get by being a student in a classroom. I met real students, learned about their lives, and found a whole other side of teaching that is extremely important. Being a teacher is more than the lesson planning and instruction; other critical parts of being a teacher include building connections and trust and being someone students feel they can turn to if they need anything.

New insights

As I worked with LPP this semester, I gained valuable information that will help me be a better teacher in the future. First, an insight I gained was the importance of making connections and building trust. I met a student during my second week and it was her first time at LPP. I saw her every week and each time we sat at the table together, talked about her classes, and got to know each other. During my last Tuesday at LPP, the student asked if she could talk to me about something and she explained some issues she was having with her friends. At this moment, I realized I had built a relationship of trust with this student because she felt comfortable sharing her feelings with me. Another insight I gained from working with LPP was that students want to be seen and heard. I realized this during our Saturday activity when my group was leading our lesson. It was an opportunity for students to be creative and learn some Spanish terms, but I also found that students were very eager to share about themselves and the reasons behind the choices they made. I loved that students felt comfortable opening up to me and were happy to complete the activity with their visions.

Advice for future tutors & mentors

For future tutors and mentors working with LPP, I would first recommend being authentic and kind. The students of LPP want to get to know the real you and being your authentic self will help create meaningful relationships for you both. Also, kindness goes a long way. The students in the program look up to tutors and mentors, so modeling kindness will not only make them feel good but encourage them to pass it on. Secondly, I would recommend engaging with as many students as you can, especially the ones who seem shy or removed from the group. In my experience, I could tell the student I worked with was happy to be seen and heard since she didn’t know anyone in LPP. It can be hard for students to branch out and talk to new people, so tutors and mentors should try to connect with as many students as they can to show that they care. Overall, be there for the students and be true to yourself. It will make a big difference in the students’ lives.
