In the text, Ratliff states that the element of linking music "Seems to move inexorably forward and outward, unfolding and enfolding, according to the logic that suits it best." With this context, linking in music can be interpreted as when music connects to itself and flows forward according to what the music is trying to portray. I agree with what Ratliff is trying to say about linking music in this regard.  When linking is in music, it flows flawlessly according to what the artist is trying to portray.  Exclusivity in music in my opinion can be described as how music can incorporate certain elements and when done in a specific way, makes it part of a genre. In this sense, music is exclusive. Linking and exclusivity in music can be seen in the piece that Ratliff talks about,"Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britton." In this piece, Ratliff states how the same motion is repeated over and over. This gives the song its identity and makes it exclusive in its own right.
