Irena Sendler was born on February 15, 1910. She was born in Warsaw Poland, but she did grow up in Otwock, Poland. Her father was a physician, but he died because of typhus, in 1917, when she was only seven years old.

She was offered help from the community leaders to get help pay for her education, since her father died. She studied law for two years, then Polish literature. Irena Sendler ended up getting suspended from the University of Warsaw for three years because she opposed the ghetto bench system.

Act of Resistance

When the Nazis invaded in 1939, Irena Sendler was a social worker, and so she had access to the Warsaw ghetto. She was a member of Zegota, and she helped rescue 2,500 children from the Warsaw Ghetto. Irena Sendler was awarded the “Righteous Among the Nations” award in 1965, due to her life changing actions.

This rescue had a huge impact on people's lives because she saved many kids' lives. If she wouldn’t have done that, then there was a big chance that half of those kids wouldn’t have survived. This also had a huge impact because once those kids got rescued out of the ghetto, they got placed in a hiding home, where they got proper care.

Michał Głowiński was someone who was saved by Irena Sendler, and survived the war. He was born on November 4, 1934, and he also studied at the University of Warsaw, where Irena had studied. Later in his life, he wrote a book, dedicated to Irena Sendler, and her saving his life in the war.
