A connections I can make is like learning how to drive a car we first might just remember the rules of the roads but once we understand the why to the rules we are able to make a deeper understanding that is more meaningful. Another connection is this reminds me of studying for test, When I just try and remember definitions I tend to forget them after the test. But when I am able to connect the information to things I already know I actually remember it more which I know we covered in class.

I remember watching this video in class and discussing how some CLD/EEL students feel anxiety or a lack of confidence because they feel the teachers and their peers are thinking poorly of them for not understanding the lesson.

I remember this is something that many of our learners are doing, and we should tap into that by engaging them and embracing their languages. They may add words from home and from groups of friends to give context to writing lessons. They may also want to talk about their way of saying a word or phrase that might be introduced to them in English.

I remember that this was about how high anxiety or low self esteem creates barriers for developing language. I still want to know what motivators work best to reduce the anxiety and build confidence? I wonder how these results play out in the long run of a students success in education.

I love the concept of building background with students as a pre-lesson activity because it allows the students to share what they know and learn some new, and potentially critical, information about a new lesson topic. It also allows them to learn about new vocabulary and concepts before the actual lesson, which is very beneficial for CLD students.

One connection I made was with my previous class, all about student assessments. In my lesson plan I include an assessment every 3-4 minutes, even a simple "thumbs up if you agree, thumbs down if you disagree" activity is an informal assessments, although not the best assessment example. I really enjoy blending assessments and activities in my lesson plan, like having a think-pair-share, where the share part is a "modified whip-around" where selected students share with the whole class in addition to their partners or group.

I think Funds of Knowledge is a great way, from our learning, to bring in the community around our classroom. Students will be able to connect with their families and even get participation from them in other areas. When we tap into the funds of knowledge, we gain more support and build a memorable rapport with the students and their families. We may even be surprised by seeing how many families will show up to more school related events and want to help out.

When I looked at this comic, it reminded me of the video we watched in class about the student who knew the answer but could not explain it in the way the teacher expected. In the comic, the student says, "and she got angry because I didn't pay... she thinks I pay attention..." This made me think about how teachers can sometimes misunderstand students. Just because a student cannot explain something in the expected way does not always mean they were not paying attention or do not understand the concept.

As teachers, we need to create opportunities for students to show what they know instead of assuming they do not understand. The video showed that the student actually knew the correct answer, but he was not able to communicate it in the way the teacher wanted. That does not mean he lacked understanding. It reminded me that language and communication are different from knowledge.

Families are knowledge-holders. Students arrive with linguistic and cultural resources, engagement changes when you include their experiences and what they already know. The shift is from asking "what is this student missing?" to "what has this student already been taught at home that I can build on?"

As a 5th grade teacher I would explain this as a concept I can use to build strong relationships with my students. The thermometer stands for the emotional climate of my classroom and students. When students feel safe, understood and respected they will participate more. Each of them can be broken down into steps. 1. knowing how my students feel, 2. getting them to bond, 3. learning about their self-concept, 4. providing validation, and 5. exploring their feelings about me and my teaching and doing these thing's will get them to relax and build confidence

Talking to students with intentional questions is so important for helping you connect with your students. Talking to students outside of class, such as in the hallways, before school, after school, during lunch bunches, ect - all perfect moments to ask intentional questions about your students and then follow up with their answers.

I learned that every student brings valuable funds of knowledge from their own culture, family, and life experiences. When students have opportunities to share these experiences, the whole class learns from one another. It also helps students feel proud of their identities, builds confidence, and creates a more inclusive classroom where everyone's background is respected.

This picture reminded me of what it can feel like for students who do not understand the language that is being used around them. Even though the teacher may be explaining something clearly from their perspective, the student may feel confused, disconnected, or left out because they are trying to understand both the content and the language at the same time. This made me think about how important it is for teachers to be aware of their students’ backgrounds, experiences, and languages.

I remember being in my high school French classes and everyone felt nervous or embarrassed to be the one to speak aloud. Nobody wanted to attempt a proper accent when speaking, out of fear that it would seem like they were trying too hard. I felt frustrated, like I couldn't really immerse myself in the language if everyone around me was saying 'bonjour' in a thick American accent.

Building background can be one of the most vital steps to prepare before a lesson. It is important to understand what knowledge your students are bringing to the concept, and what they are most curious about! This summer I taught a week long Marine Biology camp for 5th graders. On the first day, I asked them to create a big list of things they knew about already, and a list of things they were curious to learn more about. I might not have thought it important to go over food webs, but I saw numerous students had prior knowledge of food chains, and felt it was a great opportunity to build on that knowledge. In addition the students were far more engaged because they could see that I valued what they brought into the classroom and wanted to teach them about what they were most interested in.
