Edward Barron Chandler was elected to represent Westmorland county within the New Brunswick parliament in 1827. In his first meeting in 1828 he took active part in the discussions, and was soon regarded in spite of his youth as a leading figure in New Brunswick parliament. He soon became actively involved in the distribution of crown lands, and customs revenue in New Brunswick, and in 1833 accompanied Charles Simonds to London to present their case. Nearly all of their objectives were accomplished, and Edward Barron Chandler gained a positive reputation among the people of New Brunswick, (Swift, 1972).

Chandler was invited to the Charlottetown conference as a part of the group of New Brunswick politicians attending the conference. Chandler, though being actively involved in politics for the majority of his life, had never developed a strong opinion on the topic. As the conference progressed, Chandler became certain that confederation was inevitable, although he lobbied for a maritime union prior to confederation to give the maritime provinces more negotiation power when the time came to confederate; this was contrary to the more popular stand of outright joining confederation, and was unpopular among his peers. In the Quebec conference that same year Chandler lobbied for increased provincial power. This idea was disputed by John A. MacDonald who claimed that increased provincial powers may lead to a repeat of what happened in the United States, and lead to a civil war later in time. After the terms for confederation were settled Chandler was among those who travelled to London to finalise the terms with the crown, (Plummer & Bumsted, 2008).

Edward Barron Chandler occupied a public office for nearly sixty years, and gained a positive reputation among the people of New Brunswick. As the push for confederation increased Chandler pushed for favourable terms in New Brunswick. After confederation Edward Barron Chandler became known as a Father of Confederation, and then administered the construction of the Inter-colonial Railway specifically between Nova Scotia and Quebec, (Plummer & Bumsted, 2008). A plaque in honour of Edward Barron Chandler has been erected in his birthplace of Amherst nova Scotia, on 98 Victoria Street East, (Parks Canada, 1985).

Edward Barron Chandler is known to have claimed a difficult childhood, but no evidence has been found to support this statement. If it is indeed true, then his wealthy family with whom he had connections with will have made up for his own family’s loss of wealth. Edward was educated initially in Amherst Nova Scotia, but later studied law with his cousin in Westcock Nova Scotia. This led to Edward’s later career in law, which developed into politics, (Swift, 1972).
