"He always looked all right, Stradlater, but for instance, you should've seen the razor he shaved himself with. It was always rusty as hell and full of lather and hairs and crap" (27).
2.
Stradlater has a very messy interior as he fails to maintain his health whereas his exterior juxtapose these aspects of him in very extreme ways: he is handsome and charming, unsuspecting of his disoriented way of living.
3.
This character further emphasizes Holden's hatred towards "phonies" as Stradlater is one thing on the inside but appears to be another, not remaining true to his identity.
4.

"You'd like her. I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you're talking about. I mean you can even take her anywhere with you" (67).
2.
Phoebe is depicted as a very well-rounded character, full of intelligence, spontaneity, and kindness. Her red hair contrasts her sympathetic character and her young age seems to have no affect on her maturity.
3.
In relation to Holden's life, Phoebe represents a symbol of purity and innocence that the world seems void of now. She is also a reminder of Allie, another character Holden cares deeply for.
4.

"She's a dancer,' I said. 'Ballet and all. She used to practice about two hours every day, right in the middle of the hottest weather and all. She was worried that it might make her legs lousy- all thick and all. I used to play checkers with her all the time" (17).
2.
Jane is a very genuine person with a heart and personality that radiate. She is caring person that lives a seemingly average life but also has her own secrets.
3.
Jane is the key to unlocking Holden's sensitive side: he often holds a pessimistic view of the world but softens when thinking of Jane and the memories they made. She betters him and it is clear he cares deeply for her, reminiscing in the little things about her that made him smile.

"He's got a lot of dough, now. He didn't used to. He used to be just a regular writer, when he was home. He wrote this terrific book of short stories, The Secret Goldfish, in case you never heard of him. The best one in it was 'The Secret Goldfish.' It was about this little kid that wouldn't let anybody look at his goldfish because he'd bought it with his own money. It killed me. Now he's out in Hollywood, D.B., being a prostitute. If there's one thing I hate, it's the movies." (1)
2.
D.B. made his life into a success story in a place full of fake people. While he used to write for himself, D.B. made a name for himself and makes movies to please others.
3.
D.B. is also a representation of the phonies in Holden's life. Holden still cares for him, but holds on to the previous memories he held with D.B. where Hollywood's fakeness had not tarnished his brother.

"'Hollywood,' she said. Then she got up and went over to where she'd put her dress down, on the bed. 'Ya got a hanger? I don't want to get my dress all wrinkly. It's brand-clean" (95)
2.
Sunny is a prostitute pulling at any strings to make a living for herself. She is desperate but wears her confidence well, making sure others know that she is in charge when in reality, she needs them more than they need her.
3.
Sunny wears a green dress which may symbolize purity and innocence. She does not want to damage it, a representation of corruption. Holden realizes and is disgusted that someone in that field of work could waltz around in a symbol of such purity when she is so obviously the opposite.

"...I wrote about my brother Allie's baseball mitt. It was a very descriptive subject. It really was. My brother Allie had this left-handed fielder's mitt. He was left-handed. The thing that was descriptive about it, though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere. In green ink."
2.
Allie was a very versatile person, gifted in both sports and academics. He used his intelligence for the better, to further his learning experience even out on the field. Once again, the green ink is a representation of his innocence and purity.
3. Holden idolizes Allie, praising his well-rounded character. He acts as Holden's guardian angel in a sense, keeping him from entirely losing his sense of deep emotion and connection to others.
4.
