I am joining the course from Berlin where I teach English and French at a secondary school (students from 11 to 18 years old). Digital citizenship education is extremely relevant today as people tend to spend more and more time on their phones diving into their filter bubbles. It is important to connect people of all ages, help them navigate and network safely.

I teach Portuguese at Escola Secundária de Arganil, a school that belongs to a group - Agrupamento de Escolas de Arganil. My students are between 15 and 18 years old. I'm also a senior ambassador for the European Parliament's Ambassador Schools programme and an eTwinning mentor. So i work a lot online and digital citizenship education is very important in a society that is increasingly dominated by digital and AI, so we need to give our students the skills to face this challenge...I'm a curious person by nature, so my interests are diverse, I like to learn a little about everything that can help my students become more aware citizens and prepared for the challenges of the future.

Elections are comming in Belgium and most of our students are not very familiar with how our democracy and in specific our complex Belgian political system works. They do receive some information on their socials, but very little politicians reach young people and those who do, are mostly situated far right or far left. To me digital citizenship is the endless technical posibilities phones offer in participating in the democratic proces, but what I see is that students receive only very limited and coloured information in which nuance and understanding is lost.

I am Irgen I am a teacher of Humanities and Civics in a Foreign Languages High School in Elbasan, Albania. Nowadays, active citizenship cannot be completed without acquiring digital citizenship competencies.

Struggling with disinformation, AI generated "knowledge", propaganda and troll factories, has made teaching citizenship competencies, real hard. This is amplified in countries, which have a lot to achieve in the path towards a functional democracy, as my country.

I think digital citizenship education is essential for everyone involved in education in order to teach students in a more conscious way.

I am interested in developing my student's critical and scientific thinking, making them see the importance of their role in caring for the environment. In recent years we have seen a growing need to work on information, awareness and training in the safe use of the Internet, mobile phones and video games by minors. The results of statistical studies in this regard as well as different incidents published in the media have permeated public opinion and have generated some institutional concern. At the end of the day it would be about guaranteeing the rights of the child in the new scenario constituted by new technologies.

My subjects are politics, history and biology at a secondary school, students aged from 10 to 19. Many of my students come from more difficult backgrounds than the average german student. Nearly everyone in my classes has a migration background. We discuss a lot about the right wing party AfD in Germany. Last week we had politicians from different parties in the classroom. It was a very emotional and activating moment.

Before joining the faculty here, I lived and taught in 5 different countries in Europe and Asia between 2017-2022.

I was a also university professor in the US from 2009-2015 with specializations in strategic communication, critical/cultural studies, and cultural anthropology. I've also taught service-learning courses and written Erasmus+ grants in the past.

I look forward to learning more about how my colleagues and I can augment the current civics curriculum based on what I'm able to learn in this course in ways that make the topic feel more relevant and personal to our students.

At the moment, one major challenge is that civics doesn't feel "important" to many of our students because 1. it seems abstract and theoretical to them and 2. it's not emphasized in the 8th grade exams nor the baccalaureate, so many of them see no need to take it seriously.

At our school we implement various activity programs, as well as an European Erasmus + Program and eTwinning programs. 

Every year we support Safer Internet Day (SID) and take part with many activities. After an evaluation process 3rd High School of Ymittos was awarded the Gold Certification eSafety Label.

We also participate every year in Code Week and in Hour of code activities in order to raise awareness for the importance of programming and coding.
