Was with the pudgy hands of a thirteen-year-old
that I took the marble of his head
just barely balanced on his reedy neck
and with the brute tutelage
of years fighting the neighbor kids
and too the lightning of my father's
stiff palm I leaned the boy's head
full force into the rattly pane of glass
on the school bus and did so with the eagle of justice
screaming in my ear as he always does
for the irate and stupid I made the window sing
and bend and the skinny boy too
whose eyes grew to lakes lit by mortar fire
bleating with his glasses crooked
I'm not an animal walking in place
on the green vinyl seat looking far away
and me watching him and probably almost smiling
at the song and dance I made of the weak
and skinny boy who towering above me
became even smaller and bizarre and birdlike
pinned and beating his wings frantically
against his cage and me probably
almost smiling as is the way of the stupid
and cruel watching the weak and small
and innocent not getting away.

This is a story about how Ross Gay beat a kid up on the bus. At first I thought he might have killed the boy, but that was not the case. The boy might have been bullying him, that why "the eagle of justice" was screaming in his ear. Ross Gay describes the boy as "...the weak and skinny boy who towering above me..." meaning that Ross Gay was probably picked on by this kid. I wouldn't describe this poem as a poem of triumph however because although sometimes the tone is triumphant I also percieved it as being a little regretful.

This poem is a story about ho the author beat up a kid on the bus. I think that he wrote the poem as a sort of apology for what he did. Even though he didn't know where the kid is now, he wanted to get the story out there and wanted people to know. The poems title is "For Some Slight I Can't Quite Recall", I think that this is the title because the author does not remember why he beat up the kid, he just remembers that he did it.

I believe that this poem tells a story of a kid beating up someone who used to intimidate him, possibly a bully. He is unable to remember why he hurt the victim, but he knows it gave him satisfaction when he did it. He referred to the victim as a skinny boy towering above him now becoming smaller and more bizarre, leading me to believe he stood up for himself against a bully using violent tactics. I don't think he did the right thing, and given the inability to remember his motivation for the assault, the kid probably doesn't believe he did the right thing either.

This poem tells the story of the narrator, whom I believe to be Ross Gay, beating up a kid on the school bus, who based on the line "...boy who towering above me . The diction "eagle of justice/screaming in my ear" leads me to believe that his actions must have, at the least, be justified within himself at the time, however, the tone set at the end of the poem and the fact that Ross Gay even wrote this poem infers that he feels regret or remorse from these actions.

This poem seemed to be about the narrator/author Ross Gay beating up a child on the school bus. However, Gay implies that at one point he hadn't been so powerful over the skinny boy: " I made of the weak and skinny boy who towering above me" The usage of the term towering above me demonstrates that this boy had power over Gay before. Towards the end of the poem when it said "way of the stupid and cruel watching the weak and small and innocent not getting away." The narrator almost feels empathy and remorse for the boy and his own actions. Overall my main take away from the poem was that getting revenge over the boy did not necessarily make Ross feel better which seems to demonstrate the "two wrongs don't make a right" message.

At first, I noticed the poem was filled with imagery so the reader could portray the scene and thoughts going on in the poet's mind while he was writing this. I find it quite interesting that the poem takes place in a short amount of time leading up to when the poet describes the scene of what he did to the boy. However, the poet also uses the phrase of "with the eagle of justice screaming in my ear as he always does" to imply that his actions necessarily weren't the right thing to do, almost like his conscience trying to give a final warning. This phrase and using an eagle to describe what just behavior looks like connects to the imagery near the end of the poem relating the boy to a

This poem is about Ross Gay the beating a kid up on the bus I think at the time he believes that his actions were just because he says " the eagle of justice screaming in my ear as he always does" I also think that he believes that being condescending makes him free as the person he's beating up is said to be in a cage trapped and Ross was the towering figure above him "pinned and beating his wings frantically" as reflects on this situation he realizes that his actions were not smart and they made him feel regretful. It is almost comparing the eagle which is a pretty strong bird to the weak fragile birds, the eagle also represents freedom to do what he thinks is right and not to listen to his mind now he realizes this was a wrong thing to do.

After reading the poem a few times to illustrate my thoughts, this poem seems to be about how the narrator (Ross Gay), beats up a kid who might have hurt him before. The ¨skinny boy¨ could have been a bully before as he states ¨I made of the weak and skinny boy who towering above me¨. Towards the end, it also seems as he tries to tell us how he isn´t able to recall why he did what he had done but he felt very secure and justified after he had done it.
