Fair use is the right of the public to make reasonable use of copyrighted material without the creators permission. This means there are exceptions for certain topics such as, criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research. You still have to get a license from the creator and get their permission to allow you to use or display their work based on what your using it for. A good example is if a teacher is showing a movie during class, for educational purposes, and is only showing it for a specific amount of time.

Public domain is something that is not copyrighted and may be used without the creators permission. Even though you are allowed to use the creators work without permission you should always give them credit. The right thing to do is giving the credit thats due, even though you don't have to, but its better then just using their work and you taking the credit for it.

A bad example is disobeying the creators wishes and using their work or editing it without them knowing or allowing you to.
