Throughout the chapters about the trail it talked about how there was so much evidence to prove that Tom was innocent but they still gave him a guilty verdict. In chapter 24 it said that he got shot 17 times. If a person is shot more than 2 times they are very injured and can't move or do anything. They shot Tom and just kept shooting him.
