They are expected to have a library book in their bag at all times and to independently read for 15 minutes each evening.

The programme motivates students to read and improve their literacy skills by having them choose books at their own level, read them, and then take a short online quiz to test their comprehension. The software uses data from the quiz results to provide feedback to teachers and students, helping them set goals and choose appropriately challenging books within the student's "Zone of Proximal Development" (ZPD). 

Students who achieve their targets are rewarded - the reward for this term is a trip to the cinema.

Through hands‑on activities, teamwork, and real‑world challenges, students develop skills in areas such as digital literacy, online research, communication, project planning, and responsible technology use. They also learn how to use digital tools to design solutions, share ideas, and make a positive impact in their school and wider community.

Workshops like this help our students grow into thoughtful, capable digital citizens who can lead, innovate, and collaborate — skills that will serve them well long after TY.

Our students spent the afternoon in the nursing home learning the tradition of cross‑making, sharing stories, and connecting across generations. Experiences like this help them develop meaningful interpersonal skills — empathy, communication, teamwork, and confidence — while also strengthening their sense of community and cultural heritage.

A huge thank you to The Millbury Residence for welcoming our students so warmly and helping keep this special tradition alive.

This trip helped students develop valuable skills such as critical thinking, historical inquiry, active listening, and respectful engagement with heritage spaces. It also encouraged them to connect classroom learning with real‑world history, strengthening their appreciation for culture, memory, and the importance of preserving our shared past.

A memorable and educational day for all involved.

By taking part in Young St Vincent de Paul, these students will develop meaningful life skills such as empathy, leadership, teamwork, communication, and social awareness. They’ll learn how to identify needs in their community, plan projects, organise events, and support others with compassion and respect.

Most importantly, they’ll experience the power of giving back and discover how small actions can create big change.

We’re really looking forward to seeing what this inspiring group of young people will achieve.

Weekly class attendance will be posted to the tutors, year heads and around the school.

Students should encourage their class mates to come to school to possibly win the competition.

The class group, in each year, with the most improved attendance during this time will win a prize.

Then it was off to Croke Park for an amazing stadium tour — exploring the dressing rooms, walking through the players’ tunnel, and taking in the views from the stands.

Our Literacy Week aims to highlight the power of words, encourage students to express themselves, and build confidence in reading and writing. It was fantastic to see so many students taking part and pushing their creative boundaries.

Students will also take part in Paired Reading, World Book Day events with Ard Rí, and subject‑based literacy tasks across the school — all designed to spark imagination and build confidence with language.

But the training went far beyond making coffee. Students explored the journey of the coffee bean, the importance of hygiene and safety, and the value of teamwork in a busy café environment. They practised communication skills, problem‑solving, and the kind of calm confidence needed when serving customers.

By the end of the programme, each student had gained practical skills, a deeper appreciation for the work behind every cup, and a sense of pride in mastering something new. The experience blended learning with creativity, giving TY students a real taste of what it’s like to step behind the counter as a barista.
