These ants are known as alates. Their purpose is to leave the colony in swarms and make new colonies. This social behavior increases the chances of survival for ants because it ensures that new colonies are constantly being established, therefore increasing the ant population.

They leave trails of pheromones for other ants to follow. When an ant finds food, other ants follow the tail left by that ant so that they can help bring the food back to the colony.
This behavior became an adaptation because if ants didn't leave pheromone trails they could lose the colony. If ants couldn't find their way back to the colony, the colony would not get food.
