In chapter 4 Huck is so desperate for Pap to be gone, Huck's opinion of Jim's magic takes a 180 and pays him to ensure that.

It's in chapter 5 that Pap appears and proceeds to immediately criticize Huck's education. Pap sees Huck as arrogant and vain to practice literacy. Pap goes as far to call education a "frill" saying "he's never seen such a son"(Twain 29). The flat putrid character of Pap criticizes the South as an ignorant drunk fully capable of violence.
