Lucas Liu by

Lucas is a new student at Harrow School this year. He has adjusted well to Year 2, establishing relationships with his peers and the adults around him. Lucas enjoys sharing his ideas on topics that interest him and shows a desire to excel, demonstrating particular strengths in reading and art. He effectively organizes himself according to classroom routines; however, he appears to struggle with participation in PE lessons.

Lucas requires support to maintain focus and attention during whole-class discussions. He is encouraged to wait for his turn to speak, as he often interjects with his ideas and interrupts others. Additionally, Lucas needs reminders regarding personal space for himself and others. He requires significant support with self-regulation, particularly in managing his emotions when situations do not go his way.

In the discussion sessions of each class, he is very keen for everyone to listen to him for the parts he is familiar with, and of course he listens attentively to the ones he is not familiar with. Occasionally, when he can't control his imagination, he keeps talking, but reminders don't seem to work for him. But when he starts to create, everything is normal, and he is very focused on his creation.

Effective strategies: Respect his right to choose to express his creativity and he will be happy to follow the teacher's request to create work. Choosing topics on which he can think deeply will also increase his interest in focusing.

Ineffective strategies: Always naming him in a group will be perceived as a bad reproach. Ask him to do something in a forceful way and he will refuse and act unhappy. But he will listen to others' suggestions. But sometimes it takes some time to calm down when emotions come up before he can consider other people's suggestions.

Lucas gets bored very quickly during some of the activities in PE and also during the football academy. To help him, I gave him some activities to do on his own for a couple of minutes.

Lucas is very reward driven. If you show him a sticker and give him reminders on how he can achieve it, he will try to focus. He can be stubborn and lacks skills to show patience and resilience, so asking him to do something often results in a 50/50 chance of him doing it. Praising him for small things regularly can help to keep him on track. He likes to be singled out when being praised, "Lucas I like that you sat patiently with your hand up. Well done."

I appreciate that Lucas experiences urges to be very friendly and touchy with his peers. He finds it difficult to take the perspectives of others and understand the boundaries of others. It may upset him to feel rejected or if his friendliness is not reciprocated in the moment, causing him to get upset and react badly. It is important for teachers and students to understand his intentions and try to help him to act reasonably and correctly in certain social situations.
